Netflix just dropped a first look at its upcoming psychological thriller, Unchosen, and it appears to be a gripping and shadowy series. The show features Molly Windsor, Asa Butterfield, Christopher Eccleston, Siobhan Finneran, and Fra Fee. Netflix revealed details and a teaser trailer on its Tudum website.
Unchosen is a six-episode thriller created and written by Julie Gearey. The story takes place inside a strict and secretive religious group. Windsor plays Rosie, a wife and mother who lives in this closed Christian community with her husband Adam, played by Butterfield, and their young daughter.
Initially, the group seems peaceful and well-ordered. However, the arrival of Sam, a man who escaped from prison (played by Fee), disrupts everything. Sam’s presence makes Rosie start to doubt the rules she’s always lived by. As her marriage faces difficulties, she finds herself drawn to Sam. The show ultimately asks us to consider: is the danger the controlling group itself, or Sam, the outsider?

I was really struck by the teaser for this new show. The leader, Mr. Phillips, played by Eccleston, talks about how amazing their community is – how they’re all blessed to live together, with families thriving, women nurturing, and men providing, and how it protects them from the outside world and even from inner darkness. But honestly, the trailer itself showed a completely different picture! The community looked really strained and secretive, and it definitely didn’t seem like a safe haven for everyone. It’s a really interesting contrast, and it’s got me hooked!
Gearey wrote the series, created it, and oversees its production as executive producer. Iona Vrolyk and Myar Craig-Brown are executive producers with Double Dutch Productions, and Nick Pitt handles the producing duties. Philippa Langdale and Jim Loach directed the episodes.
Unchosen delves into themes of control, belief, relationships, and personal liberty. The preview suggests a story filled with emotional struggles and lurking threats. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a specific date, the series will be available to stream in the near future.
