Crypto Guy’s Trial: Almost Over?! 🤯

So, Roman Storm, one of the people behind Tornado Cash – which, let’s be real, sounds like a villain’s lair in a really low-budget superhero movie – is almost done with his trial. His lawyers are apparently planning to wrap things up next week. Which is good, because honestly, who has the attention span for a cryptocurrency trial that goes on forever? 😴

The judge, Katherine Failla, is expecting closing arguments Tuesday or Wednesday. Five days to convince a jury he didn’t do anything wrong. Five days! That’s barely enough time to binge-watch a decent show about… well, probably cryptocurrency.

And the big question: will Storm actually testify? He said he “may or may not.” Which is a very lawyerly way of saying, “I’m not committing to anything right now, because that’s my job.” It’s like when you ask me if I’m going to the gym. The answer is always “may or may not,” and it usually leans heavily towards “not.”

Friday involved an FBI agent saying Storm had control of funds. Groundbreaking! I mean, you start a company that moves money, you usually have some control over the money. It’s kind of the point. This whole thing is a real nail-biter, guys. They’re accusing him of money laundering, running an unlicensed money transmitter, and messing with US sanctions. It’s a whole laundry list of things you shouldn’t do. 🧺

Community Reacts (aka Rich People Feel Bad)

Apparently, the crypto crowd is very invested in this. Vitalik Buterin, the guy who basically invented Ethereum, is throwing money at Storm’s legal defense fund. Over $2.8 million! Which, honestly, feels like a lot of money to spend on legal fees. You could buy a small island with that. Or, you know, several very nice handbags.👜

Buterin tweeted something about protecting their own and upholding honor. It’s very noble. It’s also a little like a guild protecting a fellow member. Like a cryptocurrency mafia, but with better branding.

One Reddit user said privacy is a constitutional right. Which is true, but also, if you’re using something called “Tornado Cash,” maybe you shouldn’t be surprised if people are curious about what you’re up to. Just saying. 🤔

And to top it all off, Storm claims a payroll company, Gusto, deactivated his account. Because apparently, being accused of crimes is bad for business. Who knew? 🤷‍♀️ They haven’t responded to questions, which I’m assuming means they are currently hiding.
