Crypto Companies Embark on Banking Adventures – A Tale of Charters and Compliance Woes!

It appears that four renowned crypto firms, driven by the most noble intentions of fusing their digital assets with the revered world of traditional finance, have decided that banking is indeed the next great frontier. According to a most intriguing report from the Wall Street Journal, these daring companies are seeking the elusive banking licenses. How utterly adventurous! 😏

Circle, the proud issuer of the USDC, and BitGo, that ever-so-determined financial institution, are reportedly striving for federal bank charters. These charters would allow them to gallantly serve as conventional lenders, bestowing upon us the noble services of deposits and loans. What a revelation! 💰

Not to be outdone, Coinbase and Paxos have been whispering in the corridors of finance, exploring “similar moves.” Quite the ambition! How very enterprising of them to attempt such bold feats! 🏦

At present, only Anchorage Digital has managed to secure the coveted federal bank charter. An enviable position, no doubt, but with it comes the inevitable burden of compliance—such a tiresome thing, I dare say. 😩

One cannot help but recall the tale of Anchorage, which in 2022 found itself at the mercy of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC, in its infinite wisdom, demanded that Anchorage enhance its efforts regarding client due diligence, monitoring suspicious activity, and other such anti-money-laundering measures. How tedious! ✍️

Last week, Barron’s reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s El Dorado Task Force, that ever-vigilant protector of financial purity, deigned to inquire about Anchorage’s practices. The very thought of it! 😱

And what, you might ask, does the ever-gracious CEO of Anchorage, Nathan McCauley, have to say on such matters? Well, he confesses, with great humility, that complying with federal regulations is hardly an easy task. The whole “gamut of regulatory and compliance obligations” seems, indeed, to be intertwined with the crypto industry in the most tiresome manner. Oh, the burden of it all! 😅
