In a revelation that could make even the most stoic of butlers raise an eyebrow, our dear friend ZachXBT has unearthed the rather unfortunate tale of Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, who, in a fit of misplaced trust, lost a staggering $150 million worth of XRP back in January. The culprit? None other than the notorious LastPass breach of 2022, which has now become the stuff of legend (and not the good kind). 🕵️♂️
It seems that while the world was blissfully unaware, a US law enforcement filing has brought this scandal to light. Though the hack took place in January, it was kept under wraps, much like a secret recipe for Aunt Agatha’s infamous fruitcake.
ZachXBT: The Crypto Sherlock Holmes
Enter ZachXBT, the crypto industry’s very own Sherlock Holmes, who has a knack for sniffing out the most dastardly of deeds. He’s been known to chase down the likes of the Lazarus Group and assist hapless victims in reclaiming their lost fortunes. But today, he has turned his keen eye towards Ripple, and one can only imagine the shenanigans that ensued.
Just last month, he managed to send most of OpSec’s staff packing after a particularly revealing investigation. Now, with a flourish of his digital magnifying glass, he has set his sights on Ripple. One can only hope he doesn’t find any more skeletons in the closet! 🦴
“A forfeiture complaint filed yesterday by US law enforcement revealed that the cause for the ~$150 million hack of Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen’s wallet in January 2024 was due to the rather unfortunate decision to store private keys in LastPass (the password manager that was hacked in 2022). Until now, Chris had kept this little tidbit under his hat,” he quipped on Telegram, likely with a smirk.
This particular escapade targeted Larsen’s private XRP wallet, which, it appears, was rather carelessly safeguarded using LastPass. One must wonder if he thought it was as secure as Fort Knox! Alas, LastPass had its own troubles back in 2022, exposing the wallet details of hundreds of users, including our beleaguered co-founder. At that time, it was estimated that around $35 million in crypto was pilfered from 150 victims. But today’s revelation suggests the losses were far more substantial. Oh, the humanity! 😱
As one might expect, the price of Ripple’s XRP token did not take kindly to ZachXBT’s allegations. It has been as erratic as a cat on a hot tin roof, plummeting 20% after Trump’s Crypto Reserve announcement. Earlier this morning, XRP was cautiously eyeing a price rebound, but alas, it fell more than 7% after the Telegram post. Perhaps the market is simply feeling a bit under the weather? 🤔
As for Ripple CEO Chris Larsen, he has been rather tight-lipped about the whole affair, and ZachXBT has yet to make any further statements. It seems Larsen’s social media account has been as quiet as a church mouse since October 2024, when he was busy posting about election-related matters. One can only hope he’s not hiding under his desk! 🐭
Meanwhile, LastPass continues to peddle its services on social media, much to ZachXBT’s chagrin, who has not held back in his criticism.
“Has your team forgotten that LastPass was breached in 2022, leading to nine figures in crypto thefts? Let’s not forget your team has long covered up the extent of the attack and gaslit many confirmed victims. Now… even law enforcement publicly agrees you are likely to blame. Not a single person should use LastPass if they want a secure password manager,” he declared, likely shaking his fist at the screen.
