Tom Cruise’s upcoming movie filmed in space has been delayed, reportedly because the actor didn’t want to involve President Donald Trump in the project. Sources say Cruise was planning to work again with director Doug Liman (who he collaborated with on Edge of Tomorrow), and the film needed the cooperation of NASA.
According to sources, Tom Cruise intentionally avoided asking Donald Trump for any help with getting the movie made.
According to a source, filming the movie would require approval from NASA and the federal government. Apparently, Tom Cruise was hesitant to ask then-President Trump for assistance with getting that approval.
According to a source, Tom Cruise didn’t want to make a request due to political considerations. This follows Cruise’s earlier explanation that he couldn’t accept Trump’s Kennedy Center Honor in August because of scheduling issues.
Reports about the space project began surfacing in 2020, with Deadline noting that Tom Cruise was discussing a collaboration with SpaceX and NASA. Initially, there wasn’t even a finished script, and it’s uncertain how much progress was made on the film. That same year, then-NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine publicly voiced his enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter), stating that NASA was thrilled to work with Cruise on a movie filmed on the International Space Station. He added, as reported by NPR, that popular media like this is crucial for inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists to help NASA achieve its goals.
Apparently, Tom Cruise hesitated to seek approval from Trump’s administration for a film project, which stalled its progress. Despite this, Trump keeps mentioning Cruise in public. Just last month, while talking about pilots involved in strikes in Iran, Trump called them “perfect specimens” and said they resembled Tom Cruise, but were taller.
