Without a doubt, Critical Role has become much more than just a popular show. It’s a full-blown gaming empire, as evident by Darrington Press, the publishing arm of Critical Role, which has developed Daggerheart – a new tabletop RPG system similar to Dungeons & Dragons that fans have witnessed in various one-shots from CR. Now, get ready for an extended adventure! The eight-episode miniseries titled Age of Umbra, based on the Daggerheart system, is set to premiere at the end of this month!
Beginning May 29, the eight-part series, featuring Game Master Matt Mercer, will debut on Critical Role. Joining him are players Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Taliesin Jaffe, and Travis Willingham – you know, the regular crew. Before that, catch the Session Zero episode on May 22.
About the Age of Umbra campaign, according to the official site.
In the grim and ominous Halcyon Domain, a realm deserted by deities, souls of the deceased are afflicted with a cruel fate, being reborn as grotesque, terrifying entities. The sinister Umbra, a shadowy presence, wanders through this realm, amplifying its corruption. Yet, rays of optimism persist – Sacred Bonfires ward off the Umbra, allowing small groups to live and thrive through unity. In the vast expanse beyond, tales circulate about forgotten knowledge and powers, remnants of a bygone era, waiting to be unearthed by those daring (or reckless) enough to venture forth.
The Age of Umbra is a playable campaign framework crafted by Matthew within the core set of Daggerheart, yet similar to all games from Daggerheart, it comes alive through the collective imagination and storytelling of both players and game master as they collaboratively build its world.
The mini-series consisting of eight episodes will debut every Thursday at 7 PM, starting from May 29th. This will be broadcast on Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube. There’ll be a week off on July 3rd, and the series finale will air on July 24th. Videos-on-demand of each episode will be accessible on YouTube the next day (Monday). Immediately after each premiere, subscribers to Beacon can enjoy ad-free podcast versions split into two parts: part 1 becomes available the following Thursday, and part 2 is released the subsequent Tuesday. These podcasts are also available in two parts anywhere podcasts are distributed.
By the way, you have the chance to catch both the initial two campaigns, plus numerous other shows, on Geek & Sundry immediately!
