It’s clear that the popularity of Critical Role and Dungeons & Dragons are deeply interconnected. Critical Role skyrocketed to fame due to its entertaining, gripping, and richly narrative-driven Dungeons & Dragons Actual Play campaign videos, which captured the hearts of many viewers. However, as Critical Role continues to grow, it’s not just sticking with D&D games, but also producing its own tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) content. Their latest venture is Darrington Press, which recently released an original RPG titled Daggerheart. But the adventures of Critical Role in this realm show no signs of abating, if their recent hiring news is any indication. Critical Role and Darrington Press have just recruited renowned game designers, Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, who are well-known figures from Wizards of the Coast and Dungeons & Dragons.
Is it now the case that the original player has evolved into the game creator? In other words, has Critical Role started to shape Dungeons & Dragons? According to a recent announcement from Critical Role, renowned game designers Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford have joined Darrington Press, their publishing arm. Their role will be to expand upon the mission of creating immersive storytelling experiences by developing fresh game ideas, unique mechanics, and future updates, including upcoming expansions for all Darrington Press product lines.
Travis Willingham, CEO and co-founder of Critical Role, speaks about the new additions to their team from Dungeons & Dragons: “Jeremy and Chris are visionaries who have greatly influenced the current era of tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) design and philosophy. They’ve played a significant role in shaping how we play, bond, and let our imaginations run wild together. Their ingenuity, enthusiasm, and compassion will undoubtedly enhance every project at Darrington Press, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about what this means for Critters and the tales we continue to weave.
Previously, Perkins and Crawford were prominent figures in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, serving as Game Architect and Lead Designer respectively. They both departed from Wizards of the Coast; Perkins in May and Crawford in April. Prior to their exit, Perkins had dedicated 28 years to Dungeons & Dragons, while Crawford was part of the team for 18 years. Now it’s clear that they chose to move on from Dungeons & Dragons towards Critical Role.
This intriguing decision is undoubtedly going to make waves in the Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TTRPG) community. In essence, Critical Role could be perceived as the future frontier of roleplaying fantasy experiences. Regardless of what’s to come, Critical Role will undeniably gain from Perkins and Crawford’s extensive experience in Dungeons and Dragons.
Speaking about himself, Perkins, the Creative Director of Darrington Press, expressed that joining their team felt remarkably like returning home. He’s cherished his long-standing role as a frequent Critical Role family member, and he’s absolutely thrilled to contribute to the development of fresh, exciting realms filled with adventure.
In the meantime, Crawford, who serves as Game Director at Darrington Press, expresses his enthusiasm, saying, “I’ve always felt that exceptional games welcome everyone, and it’s this idea that I find thrilling about being part of Darrington Press. This team is brimming with passion, creativity, and dedicated to crafting engaging, connected, and outstanding story-driven experiences. I can hardly wait to build upon Critical Role’s foundation to create some truly entertaining and innovative games.
Like we said, Critical Role and Dungeons & Dragons, they’ll always be entwined.
