Cristin Milioti on ‘The Penguin’ Season 2: “I Would Love Nothing More”

Cristin Milioti has had quite an active year. Scarcely two weeks after completing her portrayal of Sofia Falcone in “The Penguin“, she jetted off to London for the filming of the new “Black Mirror” movie, titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity“. This was a swift transition between two remarkably contrasting yet deeply dark characters.

Milioti humorously expressed that she was somewhat dazed or automatically moving when she arrived, due to the rapid transition between sets. She also emphasized the speed of the two-week timeline for her transitions.

Starring as Sofia Falcone, a crime boss in the spin-off series from Batman titled The Penguin, was a significant role for Milioti. Although she has since shifted her focus to Black Mirror, fans continue to express interest in whether she might reappear in season two of The Penguin.

She shared, “I’m often asked this question and my response remains consistent – it’s the most sincere one I can give, which is that I would absolutely adore… In fact, if given the opportunity, I’d leap at the chance. My past experiences have been fantastic, so my answer is a resounding yes.

When asked if any aspect of Sofia was present in the Netflix series “USS Callister: Into Infinity“, Milioti chuckled and hinted that there could have been a slight trace of her character in the last scene when her character from “Black Mirror” looks into the mirror, stating, “I believe I caught a glimpse of Sofia at the very end.

In the story titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity“, Milioti portrays two incarnations of the same character – authentic Nanette and a digital duplicate within a perilous space simulation. Both iterations of Nanette endure hardships and face challenging decisions, reminiscent of Sofia’s experiences in “The Penguin“.

As a devoted cinephile, I can attest that being part of the filming process for “Black Mirror” was nothing short of exhilarating. Milioti found herself in a challenging role where she had to switch between portraying the real Nanette and her digital counterpart, frequently capturing both characters on camera during the same day. In her own words, “It was absolutely insane! It was incredibly intense. It was downright astonishing.

She shared that playing opposite herself proved challenging, sometimes requiring a stand-in or having her act solo in an empty space, focusing on various marks across the set while remembering the precise rhythm of ‘us’ – balancing self and other – took some time.

Milioti has the opportunity to delve into profound, emotional characters in both “The Penguin” and “Black Mirror”. She enjoys portraying powerful, intricate female personas, regardless of their origin in troubled environments. She is also open to taking on more such roles in future projects.

‘Absolutely, I can’t afford to wait seven years on anything.’
