Criminal Minds Co-Stars Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez End Their 12-Year Marriage Citing Irreconcilable Differences; Know Details

After over ten years of being married, actors Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez, who portrayed husband-and-wife characters in Criminal Minds, have decided to part ways. On Friday, Gilford, known for his role as serial killer Elias Voit on the show, filed divorce papers against Sanchez.

As reported by TMZ, the reason behind the divorce is stated as insurmountable disagreements. The document obtained by them lacks a specific date of separation, with the actor choosing to leave it undetermined for now.

The pair that portrayed an on-screen married couple in a popular crime series got married in December 2012. Over the course of their 12 years together, they welcomed two children: a 7-year-old son named Zeppelin and a 4-year-old daughter called Revel. In the divorce documents, Gilford has asked for shared legal custody of their kids. He will provide alimony to Sanchez; however, there’s no information about a prenuptial agreement being in place.

The two characters crossed paths during their roles on Criminal Minds, yet they had already established reputations as talented actors. Gilford gained recognition through his portrayal of quarterback Matt Saracen in Friday Night Lights, while Sanchez was well-known for her appearances in the series Lost.

In an earlier interview with Us Weekly, Gilford explained that acting out intense, dark scenes alongside his real-life spouse on Criminal Minds proved to be more challenging than it may appear. He elaborated, “Yes, it’s actually more difficult. It’s tougher because I don’t feel comfortable pointing a gun at my wife. … It turned out that these particular scenes were quite disturbing.

In the police procedural crime drama, Zach Gilford appeared in twenty episodes, whereas Kiele Sanchez took on the role of Gilford’s character’s wife on multiple occasions. The series debuted on television screens on September 22, 2005.
