Crime is a Family Affair in ‘Riff Raff’

Prepare yourself for a New Year’s Eve that transforms bubbly aspirations into pandemonium! The upcoming dark comedy, Riff Raff, features an extraordinary cast, serving up a tantalizing blend of complicated family relationships and deadly misconceptions involving a former assassin and a dysfunctional family gathering. Screening in cinemas starting 2 May.

This upcoming film promises an intriguing blend of humor and drama as it brings together Jennifer Coolidge’s witty humor with Ed Harris’ strong presence, Bill Murray’s sarcastic allure, and Lewis Pullman’s intense passion, creating a tantalizing mix of a darkly amusing crime caper.

Vince, brilliantly played by Ed Harris, is at the center of the turmoil. Almost two decades have passed since he swapped a criminal lifestyle for a peaceful home with Sandy, beautifully embodied by Gabrielle Union. They’ve built a tranquil rural existence with their son, DJ (Miles J. Harvey), but this idyllic life is about to be shaken up, not by a simple birthday celebration or deflated balloons.

The upcoming chaos is fueled by the unexpected arrival of Vince’s son, Rocco, portrayed brilliantly by Lewis Pullman. Rocco, accompanied by his pregnant girlfriend Marina, seems to lead a life very different from that of his reformed father, Vince. Lewis Pullman, renowned for his powerful and complex acting skills, will undoubtedly bring an explosive dynamic to Rocco, hinting at the dark secrets he may be concealing.

Should Rocco’s presence not already have cracked the tranquil veneer, he introduces two more individuals from Vince’s history: his former spouse, Ruth, brilliantly portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge, and the ominous figure of Lefty, skillfully played by Bill Murray in his distinctive understated style.

As a film buff, I’m thrilled to see that the talented and quirky actress Coolidge is stepping into the shoes of Ruth, a character known for her impeccable comedic timing and eccentric portrayals. Known as “rude, lewd, and randy,” Ruth promises to disrupt even the most prim and proper family get-togethers with her sharp wit and inappropriate humor. With Coolidge’s knack for delivering biting one-liners like no other, every scene she’s in is sure to become a hilarious and cringeworthy moment that will leave audiences rolling in the aisles.

Introducing an authentic threat to an already explosive situation is Bill Murray as Lefty, a mafia elder seeking revenge. Murray’s talent for infusing humor with a tangible air of danger makes him ideal for this part. His quest for Rocco, rooted in a dispute over his own son, hints at potential long-lasting consequences. In other words, the family’s dirty secrets might soon be marred by something irreversible.

The storyline of Riff Raff skillfully establishes an atmosphere brimming with family strife and underworld drama. The balance between Vince’s earned peace and the chaotic elements of his past makes for a captivating tale. As Lefty approaches Vince’s rapidly growing, highly troubled family, it’s not just a matter of whether blood is stronger than water, but if it will ultimately lead to violence.

Featuring an impressive ensemble acting in a script brimming with sharp wit and opportunities for intense clashes, Riff Raff is certainly worth keeping an eye on. It’s set to deliver a New Year’s Eve movie adventure that’s far from routine, delivering a twisted, yet hilarious journey into how the past can collide with the present in a way that’s both destructive and darkly amusing.
