As a long-time fan of James Gunn’s work and someone who grew up reading DC Comics from the ’80s, I am beyond excited about the upcoming animated series, Creature Commandos! The idea of a military strike team made up of classic monsters fighting against evil in the modern world is just too good to pass up.
In the upcoming season on Max streaming service this winter, the debut project in James Gunn’s fresh DC Universe is the animated series titled “Creature Commandos“. Originally inspired by the ’80s DC Comics series “Weird War Tales“, this new adaptation follows a squad of classic monsters who once battled Nazis during World War II. However, in a contemporary twist, these creatures are now brought into the present day for a reimagined storyline. Notably, James Gunn himself penned every episode in the first season.
Looking forward to the upcoming launch of “Creature Commandos”, for fans eager to express their enthusiasm towards Task Force M (Task Force Monster), DC has already stocked a plethora of merchandise available. Among these items displaying James Gunn’s new squad of extraordinary beings, there are multiple Funko Pop vinyl figures. Additionally, McFarlane Toys has introduced a new statue featuring Weasel, and a variety of T-shirts as well. Scroll down below to see the entire collection in our gallery.
The initial lineup of Funko’s Creature Commandos figures includes Eric Frankenstein, the Bride, and Dr. Phosphorus (a villain from Batman). Additionally, there’s G.I. Robot, Nina Mazursky (also known as the Gil Woman), and Weasel, who is familiar to fans from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Characters such as Rick Flag Sr., Clayface (a Batman adversary), and Circe (Wonder Woman’s enemy) are also expected to feature in Creature Commandos. Possibly, Funko may release figures for these characters at a later time in another Pop wave.
Speaking of “Creature Commandos” merchandise, each item harks back to the vintage vibe of DC Comics from the ’80s. The comics frequently showcased title logos surrounded by character heads floating around them on their covers. Pre-orders for these items are now available at the official DC Comics online store. Keep an eye out for “Creature Commandos” as they debut their first episode on Max on December 5.
