CREATURE COMMANDOS Officially Makes THE SUICIDE SQUAD and PEACEMAKER Canon…Duh

As a long-time fan of DC comics and movies, I must say that the latest development in the DC Universe (DCU) has filled me with a sense of excitement and anticipation that I haven’t felt in quite some time. The arrival of ‘Creature Commandos’ on Max not only marks the beginning of a new era for the DCU but also serves as a testament to the power of storytelling in shaping our understanding of this universe.

In essence, speculation, insinuation, and conjecture form the fundamental basis of entertainment journalism. Without these elements, major franchise media would be incomplete! However, after several weeks of ambiguous statements from James Gunn, the debut of Creature Commandos has finally confirmed it – the happenings in The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker are now officially part of the new DC Universe. The long-standing uncertainty has been resolved at last.

The moment of clarity came early in episode one of Creature Commandos as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) walk through the halls of Belle Reve Prison. In a brief conversation as the two head toward the monster wing of the facility, Waller expresses remorse over Flag’s son, Rick Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), dying during Operation Starfish. A moment later, Flag likewise references Waller’s daughter giving evidence against her. This, of course, alludes to agent Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), a member of Team Peacemaker, who was surreptitiously reporting on the rest of the team.

Through that quick conversation, it became clear that Gunn was discussing the concept of “light canon” in relation to certain events within the DCEU. In past discussions, the writer clarified that elements from the DCEU may potentially be valid within the broader DCU, but only if explicitly confirmed in projects starting with Creature Commandos. Moreover, he mentioned that the entirety of season one for Peacemaker is considered canon, except for the brief Justice League appearance at the end, as the DCU’s Justice League has yet to make an appearance.

If “Peacemaker” is established as canonical, it strongly implies that “The Suicide Squad” should also hold some level of truth. Many characters from the former film could possibly continue into this one. Yet, it’s plausible that Harley Quinn, portrayed by Margot Robbie, might be rewritten or retconned to allow for her return in future Batman productions. However, I wouldn’t mind if she remained as the DCU’s Harley, as I believe she was a standout character in the old DCEU. In my opinion, she was the best character from that era of DC Universe films.

As we progress with the series, it’s worth exploring if any other DCEU occurrences and personalities will be incorporated. However, for the moment, let’s find comfort in acknowledging that Creature Commandos is indeed the third venture within the DC Universe, not the initial one.
