Creature Commandos: James Gunn Marks Anniversary of DC’s Monstrous Team Ahead of December Debut

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for pop culture and entertainment trends, I must say that I am thoroughly thrilled about James Gunn’s ambitious plans for DC Studios. Having followed his career since the early days of Slither and Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s fascinating to witness his growth and the scale at which he is now influencing the DC Universe.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s ambitious vision for a fresh take on DC Studios is almost coming to life, starting with two eagerly awaited initiatives: Creature Commandos for TV and Gunn’s own Superman movie. This DC reboot will launch a series of upcoming lineups featuring new cast members playing various DC characters. In a recent post on his social media, Gunn expressed excitement about the anniversary of the original Creature Commandos series.

James Gunn celebrates Creature Commandos anniversary

Creature Commandos is poised to become one of the key series in DC Studios, marking a fresh beginning for the studio. The upcoming animated show has generated excitement since its announcement following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s assumption of roles as co-CEOs of the studio.

Just the other day, I hopped onto my platform of choice (previously Twitter) to commemorate the anniversary of an iconic comic book series – Weird War Tales #93, where the legendary team known as the Creature Commandos made their debut. “Today celebrates the first appearance of the #CreatureCommandos in WEIRD WAR TALES #93,” I penned down on my account. In true spirit, I also extended a heartfelt shout-out to the masterminds behind these characters, J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, as well as acknowledging the cover art from Joe Kubert.

Gunn also mentioned that the upcoming DC Studios’ #CreatureCommandos series, airing in December, is inspired by an old comic book from the 1980s, Weird War Tales #93. After nearly 40 years, this group of superpowered misfits will finally appear on mainstream media for the first time, marking a significant milestone for DC’s current universe and potentially becoming as beloved as it is to us.

Gunn’s enthusiastic endorsement of the motley crew has served as a polish prior to the series’ debut on HBO and Max in December, sparking further excitement among fans. Indeed, they were already eager for the production, but Gunn’s heartfelt praise for the animated series adds an extra layer of anticipation.

What can we expect from Creature Commandos?

In contrast to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film, the forthcoming animated series will follow a distinct narrative path. Notably, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will be in charge of the motley crew of monsters, as stated by Gunn during his video message at the Annecy Animation Festival in June, following the presentation of the show. This approach is crucial to our legacy at DC Studios and plays a significant part in shaping our vision for future storytelling. (Paraphrased from THR)

James Gunn explained his aim was to bring together DC’s movies, TV series, cartoons, and games into one harmonious concept. By syncing these various platforms, he aspires to establish a unified and uniform DC Universe. This strategy encourages the creation of varied and captivating content that thrives independently, offering “outstanding standalone entertainment,” while also weaving threads for a broader, interconnected storyline.

Essentially, Gunn’s statement suggests that the characters from the show can transition between different mediums such as animation, video games, or cinema. However, he guarantees that despite these transitions, the characters will maintain their consistency in terms of identity, background, and portrayal by the same actor.

James Gunn shared that the upcoming series picks up directly from the end of Peacemaker season one’s finale. In this sequel, Amanda Waller faces a challenging situation as she can no longer simply discard human lives for her covert and ethically questionable assignments. Consequently, “she gathers together an unconventional group of individuals, somewhat similar to the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

Although Creature Commandos may appear to be similar to past DC projects like the Suicide Squad films and Peacemaker, it actually serves as an extension of those. However, what sets this show apart is that the characters are literal monsters, as stated by the DC Boss. He’s eager for viewers to meet these unique creatures, and creating this series has been a delightful experience for him.

It’s clear why Creature Commandos connect to The Peacemaker Season 1, as the John Cena-led series has already hinted at Waller’s moral and ethical complexities. Regarding Peacemaker Season 2, Cena recently suggested that fans will see it in 2025.

Featuring Davis lending his voice to Waller, the Creature Commandos ensemble includes David Harbour portraying Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Indira Varma as the Bride, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Sean Gunn dividing his roles between G.I. Robot and Weasel.
