As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion into the vibrant world of DC Universe, I must say that the latest addition to the DCU, “Creature Commandos,” has truly piqued my interest. The show’s exploration of the creature realm mirrors the intrigue James Gunn has brought to characters like Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad. However, what sets “Creature Commandos” apart is its potential to shape the DCU’s future narrative in a significant way.
Episode six offers a heart-wrenching backstory for Doctor Phosphorus, a villain originally from the Batman comics, as introduced by the legendary Steve Englehart and Walt Simonson in Detective Comics #469. The brief but impactful moment where Batman is spotted outside the Ice Lounge reveals not only his existence within the DCU but also his established presence before the events of “Creature Commandos.”
This hint at a more mature, less jaded Batman aligns with James Gunn’s announcement of The Brave and the Bold film centering around Batman and Robin. To convincingly portray the Grant Morrison run’s Bat-Family, it is essential for Batman to be well-established and somewhat older.
Furthermore, the upcoming Teen Titans movie further substantiates this theory, as both Robin and Starfire are among the deceased in Circe’s vision. This suggests that Batman may indeed be the oldest or earliest established member of the DC Trinity, with Superman entering an existing superhero world, and Wonder Woman, presumably, not yet present.
As for who will don the cape and cowl in the DCU, we have yet to find out. But one thing’s for sure: I’ve seen enough Batman origin stories to last a lifetime; let’s catch up with Bruce when he’s a bit older, maybe not as grumpy as Batfleck, but still packing that Bat-punch!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if the DCU’s Batman will have a secret identity like Clark Kent, but instead of being a mild-mannered reporter, he’ll be a mild-mannered supervillain lair cleaner. Now that’d be a twist!
The animated series “Creature Commandos” is delivering an engaging journey reminiscent of James Gunn’s works like “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker“. In fact, I find the creatures to be even more intriguing than some of the characters in those series. However, that’s neither here nor there. What stands out most is that this show lays the foundation for the broader narrative of the DC Universe moving forward. This isn’t just about future seasons of “Peacemaker” or “Commandos“, but bigger events. We’ve glimpsed a potential future where many of our prominent heroes meet tragic ends. But that’s speculative. Episode six introduces something—and someone—significant that’s already part of the storyline.
In episode six, we delve into the backstory of Doctor Phosphorus, a character who in comic books is one of Batman’s villains. Originally introduced by the creative duo Steve Englehart and Walt Simonson in Detective Comics issue 469, this episode portrays his origin within the DC Universe. The story unfolds as Alexander Sartorius transforms into a green-skinned crime lord with burning bones, who then frequents a nightclub in Gotham City, notably the Ice Lounge, which is owned by none other than the Penguin. After dancing to some unexpected tunes by Gogol Bordello, a bolt of lightning illuminates Batman standing outside the club’s skylight.
In simpler terms, this new piece of information suggests that the moment we’re seeing is quite fleeting, but its impact is significant. It hints that Batman is not only present in the DCU, but his existence predates the events depicted in Creature Commandos. This alignment aligns well with what Gunn has previously shared about the first Batman film set in the new universe, which he described as focusing on Batman and his son Damien as Robin. To make this storyline believable, Batman would need to be older, implying he’s been active for some time. For a faithful adaptation of the Grant Morrison run, it seems necessary that the Bat-Family already exists in this universe.
In addition, we’re aware that a Teen Titans movie is in production. In Circe’s vision, Robin and Starfire are depicted among the deceased. This seems to suggest that Batman, who is one of the oldest or earliest members of the DC Trinity based on current knowledge, might play a significant role. Superman, on the other hand, appears to be joining an already established superhero community. As for Wonder Woman, it’s believed she hasn’t entered the scene yet.
As a long-time fan of DC Comics and the Batman character, I can confidently say that I have seen more than enough Batman origin stories to last me a lifetime. While I am excited to see who will take on the role in the upcoming DCU movies, I hope they steer clear of making him as jaded as Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman (Batfleck) was. Instead, I would love to see an older and more experienced Bruce Wayne, one who has been through the trials and tribulations that come with being the Dark Knight for so long. Let’s give us fans a chance to witness a more seasoned version of the Caped Crusader, one who still holds onto the hope and justice that defines Batman while also acknowledging the toll his life has taken on him.
