‘Crazy Boyband Rules’: Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and New Edition Members Recall Experiences Of Performing With Their Bands

As a die-hard fan who grew up idolizing these iconic boybands, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and amusement as I delve into the revelations about their “crazy” rules in the new documentary, Larger Than Life: Reign of the Boybands.

Members from the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and New Edition are shedding light on the challenging aspects of being part of globally popular boybands. Former NSYNC member Lance Bass, New Edition’s Michael Bivins, AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys, among others, have discussed the strict guidelines they had to adhere to in order to uphold their flawless public image.

In the recently released Paramount+ documentary, Larger Than Life: Reign of the Boybands, Bass stated, “When it comes to boybands, we’re catering to a broad, family audience.” His bandmate, Chris Kirkpatrick, then mentioned, “Because of this, there were some extraordinary rules regarding boybands.

As per Bass’ account, the record label management would discourage them from certain actions by alluding to instances involving other artists, such as Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block doing something specifically mentioned, implying that it was best not to follow suit. Essentially, he stated that these warnings were clear indications of actions not to be repeated.

To preserve their public image, the group’s members were strictly forbidden to consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes, even when they were off-stage. Other less essential rules were in place too, like the one that disallowed riding motorcycles. Kirkpatrick, however, defied this by purchasing a motorcycle and bringing it along on tour. “Nobody can ride motorcycles? Well, watch me now!” he said, reminiscing about the experience.

Furthermore, the rules weren’t just about morals or stage performances for Bivins, as stated in the documentary. He asserted that they also extended to physical appearance. “They’d tell us, ‘Shave your mustache, preserve your youth,'” he reminisced. “We can’t be Fatstreet,” Backstreet Boys member McLean continued, adding, “That’s not attractive.
