Summary
- HP meters are often hidden in RPGs like Monster Hunter, requiring players to use spells or accessories to learn an enemy’s HP.
- Players can create various traps to deal damage and capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, from flashflies to poisoned meat.
- Environmental traps can be triggered in Monster Hunter Wilds, causing massive damage and providing an advantage in battles.
In some Role-Playing Games (RPGs), there are no visible Health Points (HP) meters. Instead, players must figure out HP through spells or special items. For instance, Final Fantasy 7 features the Sense Materia spell that reveals an enemy’s HP and weaknesses. However, Monster Hunter Worlds takes a unique approach by not displaying HP at all. Players can consult a guidebook to learn about monsters’ strengths and vulnerabilities, but their HP remains hidden. This has been the case since the series first began in 2004, which is unusual for such a well-known RPG franchise like Monster Hunter.
In addition to attacking with weapons, there are other signs that a monster is near death in Monster Hunter Wilds, such as if it starts hobbling or has scars from past battles. We can also slow down monsters by setting traps, which can be crafted or found in the environment. Let’s explore all the methods players can use to trap monsters, both literally and figuratively, in Monster Hunter Wilds.
4. Animals And Bugs
From Flashflies To Sleeptoads
Players will soon discover that with keen eyesight, they can transform various elements into traps. For instance, Luminous Swarms, being large collections of floating luminescent orbs, are hard to ignore in every biome of Monster Hunter Wilds. Activating them by using the grappling hook, shooting at them, or approaching them will cause a flash of intense light. If a monster is nearby, it might become disoriented for a moment. Remember to frequently consult your map, as it marks the positions of these creatures.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Palicos have a helpful feature called Support Ability, which allows them to call Flashflies to their spot when players require additional means to trap and stun monsters. Apart from these pesky insects, players will encounter diverse frogs they can engage with. Similar to the Flashflies, players can activate the skills of these frogs by employing grappling hooks, shooting at them, or approaching them personally. For instance, the Paratoad emits a gas that can immobilize monsters, much like a stun but more potent. Similarly, a Sleeptoad will put monsters to sleep. Players can utilize these insects and frogs to strike monsters without retaliation, set up their own traps, or escape if necessary.
3. Essential Items
Lure Monsters In
In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, you need to create the top traps, but first, let’s discuss some other trap-like items you can craft. The game offers a range of meats that players can manipulate once they’ve gathered flesh from smaller monsters. For instance, Tinged Meat can cause paralysis in a monster when consumed. Drugged Meat will put monsters to sleep, and Poisoned Meat will slowly poison them, causing ongoing damage. Once you’ve prepared these tainted food items, all you have to do is lay them out, and then wait for unsuspecting monsters to eat them.
As a gamer, I’d say among those three, crafting Poisoned Meat gives me the upper hand in battles. On top of that, I can also concoct barrel bombs, with the Mega Barrel Bomb being the most destructive one. I can strategically position it on the ground, scamper away, and detonate it with an arrow or stone for a massive blast. These items are simple to craft, so it’s always smart to carry some as backups during a hunt.
2. Grappling Hook
Causing Damage Or Trapping From Above
In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, the Grappling Hook isn’t just useful for traversing the environment, it can also activate a variety of hidden traps. If players take notice of their surroundings, they might spot grapple points on natural hazards that are ripe for triggering. For instance, in the Windward Plains’ open area, there are multiple trees with hanging brush. When players hook these with their Grappling Hook, a bramble trap will sprout. Players should pick up on this during their initial encounter with Quematrice. Additionally, trees in the Ruins of Wyveria have bramble patches too, so keep an eye out occasionally. Furthermore, there are other environmental traps that can inflict massive damage on monsters.
strategic use of traps at opportune moments can expedite a mission significantly. Take for instance the tangled rock formations in the Redwood Forest; activating these traps will set off a landslide of rocks that crushes nearby monsters, immobilizing them and inflicting heavy damage. Similarly, players can find drifting debris in the Frozen Peaks, serving the same purpose. However, the most thrilling environmental trap has to be in the Oil Depot. On the outskirts of the village lies an ancient forge known as The Forge of Ages. In the initial battle with Nu Udra, players can detonate this forge, sending a powerful blow that shatters the monster into pieces – an impressive spectacle and a deeply gratifying moment.
1. Pitfall/Shock Traps
Capturing Monsters Leads To Better Rewards
In Monster Hunter Wilds, there are just two traps that players can construct to ensnare monsters: the Pitfall Trap and the Shock Trap. Neither one is inherently superior, and it’s advisable for players to carry both on any expedition. This is due to the fact that capturing monsters isn’t merely a matter of laying down a trap, waiting for them to trigger it, and then considering the job done.
Initially, players must make their target monster weak, and once it appears to hobble, they might consider setting up a Pitfall Trap or Shock Trap. If the monster falls into this trap, there’s a chance it will be caught, but the odds are low. Therefore, players should follow up by throwing Tranquil Bombs to put the monster to sleep. If the monster manages to escape, players can attempt to set another trap after dealing more damage. This gameplay resembles the Pokemon series, where catching Pokemon with Pokeballs is concerned; however, in this scenario, the ‘Pokemon’ are large, aggressive creatures that won’t hesitate to attack.
