As a long-time devotee of the Scream franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement! The return of the inimitable Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers has me giddy with anticipation. Her portrayal of the tenacious journalist turned true-crime author is a testament to her acting prowess and an integral part of the series’ success.
I’ve been on cloud nine ever since the whispers started circulating around town about Courteney Cox reprising her role as Gale Weathers in the next Scream movie! But now, it’s official – and boy, am I excited! The Scream movie account on Instagram confirmed it, putting all those theories to rest. You might remember that Courteney last graced our screens in Scream VI, where Neve Campbell took a break from the series for this installment. Can’t wait to see these two iconic characters back together again!
In the movie, Weather portrays an investigative journalist who transitioned into writing true-crime books. On the other hand, both Campbell and a former Friend’s cast member are the sole ones returning for future installments in the film series.
In addition to the two actors, Roger L. Jackson is also frequently cast, lending his voice to the Ghostface Killer character.
In a statement, the actress Campbell shared that she chose to forego participating in the sixth film, describing her decision as a challenging one. She explained that when given the chance, she felt compelled to turn it down since it didn’t align with the worth she has contributed to the series.
Although specifics about the plot of the upcoming movie are still under wraps, it’s been confirmed that if Cox’s character gets her way in the storyline, David Arquette is expected to rejoin the film series as well. Arquette originally played Dewey Riley, a character who debuted in the third installment of the franchise.
On-screen and off, Dewey and Weather’s relationship echoed; Arquette and Cox’s union lasted 15 years in reality. Unfortunately, Dewey’s character met an untimely end during the fifth installment of Scream.
Prior to the official announcement, Cox expressed her feelings to a news outlet, saying, “It was sad because Dewey is so adored and has such a goofy charm. I thought he added such a comedic touch to the entire series.” She also remarked, “I must say, that was quite disappointing.
In addition to Cox and Campbell, the upcoming movie has secured the roles of Patrick Dempsey, Isabel May, Mason Gooding, Sam Rechner, and several other talented actors. Moreover, Jenna Ortega is reportedly being considered for a part in the film’s seventh installment.
Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
