As a seasoned fan who has followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I reflect on the underwhelming performance of “The Marvels.” Being a part of the fandom that eagerly awaited the sequel to “Captain Marvel,” I was left feeling somewhat let down by the movie’s lackluster box office numbers.
As a dedicated Marvel fan myself, I must admit I was left feeling underwhelmed by “The Marvels.” Despite its hefty production budget of $274.8 million, it only managed to rake in a modest $206.1 million at the box office, leaving a significant gap between costs and earnings. Even “Ant-Man: Quantumania” has faced similar criticism, and both films have been seen as falling short when it comes to contributing to the overall narrative. It seems that many fellow Marvel enthusiasts share my sentiment, finding these recent installments disappointing in moving the story forward.
Additionally, it established an unfortunate milestone by becoming the lowest-earning film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the rare MCU productions that didn’t recoup its costs during its cinema release. Boasting some prominent actors among its cast and featuring popular characters, The Marvels, unfortunately, fell short of expectations, leaving many fans disappointed.
Today, this movie is commonly used as a cautionary tale in the industry, serving as an illustration of what should be avoided in future Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. However, it’s unfortunate because there are intriguing characters within it. Despite numerous factors contributing to its downfall, a well-known figure in the industry believes he has pinpointed the reasons for its failure and offers suggestions on how it could have been improved!
In our discussions, the person in question goes by Daniel Richtman, also known as DanielRPK. Given that we’ve cited him numerous times concerning different rumors, his perspective carries significant value. Here’s his take on the matter:
In my opinion – Bad marketing + Disney+ baggage.
I think it would have made a lot more money if it was called Captain Marvel 2 or Captain Marve: *Subtitle*

According to him, the formula was straightforward, and perhaps Marvel Studios could have prevented this financial flop at the box office by making a few minor adjustments that wouldn’t have altered the movie significantly. Granted, it’s debatable whether the film would have reached the billion-dollar milestone even with these changes, but it might have grossed considerably more if Marvel had implemented them. Some fans share this perspective.
Absolutely, I concur – the film was excellent, but many people outside of the Marvel fandom were unaware that it connected to Captain Marvel. To be honest, the title could have been more descriptive, and the marketing seemed subpar as well.

1. The marketing strategies for Marvel’s movies were ineffective and poorly timed. Releasing Captain Marvel after two Avengers films doesn’t seem significant. Interestingly, when Captain Marvel was initially announced, she had been voted by fans as the most impactful Marvel character at that moment. I’m not surprised it grossed over 1 billion dollars.

While I concur with your viewpoint, it wasn’t merely a case of poor marketing. The product was launched amidst two of the longest industrial actions in the entertainment industry, which undoubtedly impacted its promotion and exposure significantly. A comprehensive press tour would have been vital during this period, but even excellent marketing might not have fully compensated for the absence of such an event.
