Investors begin by recognizing companies they patronize daily. You might shop at Costco (COST) or stream content from Walt Disney (DIS). Such familiarity offers a lens through which to assess these businesses, though it rarely guarantees clarity.
Both enterprises serve consumers, yet their paths diverge. Which deserves your capital?
Costco: Retail Dominance at a Price
Costco’s finances resemble a fortress. From fiscal 2019 to 2024, net sales grew at 10.8% annually, weathering pandemic chaos, inflation, and trade wars. Same-store sales persist into 2025, with $62 billion in Q3 revenue. Yet this success masks a flaw: narrow product variety. Each warehouse stocks 4,000 SKUs, a fraction of competitors’. This limits supplier leverage, though customers benefit from low prices-and spend accordingly.
The membership model, however, is a double-edged sword. A 90.2% renewal rate suggests loyalty, but it also locks in expectations. At a P/E ratio of 53.9, Costco trades at a premium few would defend. The market assumes perfection; history suggests otherwise.
Disney: Streaming’s Uncertain Future
Disney’s media empire is fraying. Cable networks, once cash cows, now hemorrhage revenue-down 15% year-over-year in Q3. Operating profits plummeted 28%. Yet the company bets on streaming, where 183 million subscribers (excluding ESPN) generate 6% growth. New ventures, like the ESPN app, promise innovation but risk overreach.
The Experiences segment remains robust. Theme parks, cruises, and merchandise deliver 27.7% margins. With 700 million potential park visitors globally, expansion seems logical. Yet reliance on discretionary spending makes Disney cyclical-a vulnerability Costco lacks.
Disney’s P/E ratio of 18.5 feels cheap next to Costco’s stratosphere. The former’s risks are real, but so is its potential. Over five years, Disney’s shares may outperform, assuming management avoids the hubris that sank its cable division.
Investors must choose between a fortress with cracks and a castle under siege. One demands patience; the other, conviction. 📈
