The company’s numbers, when examined closely, reveal a similar story. Net sales have increased by 137% over the past decade, and net income by a more substantial 241%. These are not explosive figures, not the kind that capture headlines, but they are…reliable. Like a well-maintained clock, it marks the passage of time without fanfare.
Costco possesses a certain…inertia. A resistance to the wild swings of the market. This stability, while perhaps unexciting to some, is a rare and valuable commodity. It is a safe harbor, a place where capital can rest without undue anxiety. One suspects, though, that even safety has its price.
The market, it seems, is willing to pay a premium for this peace of mind. The current price-to-earnings ratio of 50.7 is a considerable increase from a decade ago, and exceeds the ten-year average. It is a curious thing, this willingness to pay more for the same earnings. One wonders if the price has outstripped the underlying value. Perhaps the expectation of future growth is already fully accounted for. A new investor, arriving now, might find the entry point…unfavorable. Unless, of course, they are prepared to wait. To simply let time take its course.
And so it goes. The market breathes, it expands, it contracts. Costco continues its steady march forward. The world, as always, remains stubbornly, beautifully, and disappointingly unchanged. The promise of wealth, like the distant horizon, always seems just beyond reach.
