It’s been a fantastic year for Superman! The recent film topped the charts as the highest-grossing superhero movie, earning praise from both critics and audiences, and a sequel is already planned. This popularity seems to have boosted interest in Superman memorabilia. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a remarkably well-preserved copy of the 1939 Superman #1 comic book recently sold for a stunning $9.1 million. Interestingly, this wasn’t even Superman’s first appearance – that happened in 1938’s Action Comics #1, which sold for $6 million just last year.
As a comic book fan, I’ve been following the news about this incredible sale, and it’s just mind-blowing! Why did one single copy sell for over $3 million—way more than the previous record? Well, a huge part of it is the condition. This comic is almost 90 years old, but experts at the Certified Guaranty Company gave it a 9.0 out of 10 – basically, it’s in amazing shape! And the story of how it was found is pretty cool too. Apparently, three brothers discovered it tucked away in their mother’s attic, hidden in a box of old newspapers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comic book was purchased by the boys’ mother when she was nine years old and living in San Francisco during the Great Depression. She often told her sons she had some valuable comics tucked away, but she could never find them, leading the boys to believe it was just a story. Their mother passed away shortly before the pandemic, and the brothers didn’t begin sorting through her belongings until earlier this year.
Stories like this one help build the mystique around historical items. It makes you wonder if the book would have been worth as much if it had simply stayed in someone’s family for decades. That’s why it’s worth taking the time to go through old boxes left by relatives – you could discover something valuable and unexpected.
