As a gamer who has grown up with the X-Men franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of highs and lows, triumphs and disappointments. When it comes to Gambit, I’ve been on this rollercoaster for nearly two decades now.
With the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Channing Tatum finally got his chance to play Gambit. His connection to the character spans nearly two decades, dating back to X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006.
Initially, Tatum tried out for the part, however, he didn’t make it into the movie. Later on, he was given a second opportunity to embody Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009; unfortunately, his schedule conflicted, resulting in Taylor Kitsch being cast instead.
Despite coming very close to starring in a solo Gambit movie produced by Fox, the project was unfortunately put on hold permanently following their merger with Disney. However, Tatum eventually brought the character to life in Deadpool & Wolverine, calling it a “dream come true,” and is now enthusiastically campaigning for a standalone film within the MCU. Many fans are backing him as the ideal Gambit for the MCU.
As a die-hard gamer, I’ve got to say, I find myself in the camp that thinks Taylor Kitsch nailed it as Gambit. Some folks might not agree, but they’re arguing his portrayal was truer to the character. Strangely enough, there are plenty who feel the same way I do, pointing out Kitsch’s charisma and physique that seemed tailor-made for the role.
What’s everyone’s opinion on Taylor Kitsch’s Gambit? I thought he was okay

It’s not necessarily a contentious issue, but I’ve personally felt that Taylor Kitsch would have been more suitable for the role of Gambit compared to Channing Tatum.
I just think that Kitsch has more charisma and swag, he’s more suave, and from what I’ve seen, is a better actor than Tatum. I mean…. look at him, Kitsch is the most Gambit looking dude I’ve ever seen.
It’s genuinely frustrating knowing that Fox had some great actors, who resembled their comic book counterparts, but they were wasted or written poorly.
James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Taylor Kitsch as Gambit, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Ben Foster as Angel, hell even Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth. All great castings in my opinion, but most, if not all, of them were just wasted.

Concerning Channing Tatum, I’ve often found his physical build somewhat unusual for the roles he plays, and my suspicion was confirmed.

Great choice….horrible directing and writing.
Definitely a better fit for Gambit than Tatum, but was kneecapped by other parts of the creative process. All the swagger in the world can’t save a character after that fire escape scene.

Despite widespread enthusiasm for Channing Tatum’s standalone Gambit film among fans, his portrayal has been subject to considerable online scrutiny, mainly centered around his accent. This point of contention arises because some fans from Southern Louisiana claim that Tatum’s Cajun accent is not authentic, while others feel he captured it perfectly.
