Connecticut Lawmaker Demands True Movie Start Times – Is It Time to Skip the Trailers?

A Connecticut state senator is growing tired of lengthy pre-film shows and trailers. He’s not attending movies for enchantment, despite my fondness for Nicole Kidman, especially in her AMC commercials. On January 21st, he put forward a bill that, if passed, would require cinemas to display the actual film start time, along with the usual screening time that includes pre-movie trailers, as reported by The Register Citizen.

It’s important to keep in mind that on the AMC app, they advise you to add around 20 additional minutes for pre-shows and trailers before the movie begins. Consequently, I usually plan ahead, allowing myself some spare time to get to the theater.

Senator Martin Looney expressed concern to The Register Citizen about what appears to be an unnecessary waste of people’s time at movie theaters. He noted that some constituents have complained about occasions when the main feature didn’t start for a significant amount of time after the advertised starting time, leaving them essentially forced to watch promotional content before getting to see the film they came to watch.

I can empathize with Senator Looney’s feelings of irritation, but it’s hardly misleading to suggest that going to the theater is deceptive, given that the experience of watching a movie there is well-known. In fact, it would be unusual and out of place not to have advertisements, trailers, and pre-shows before a film, as they are an integral part of the cinema experience and a key aspect of how theaters generate revenue.

While it’s understandable that people dislike ads, they are essential for businesses as they generate revenue needed to keep operations going. If viewers consistently ignore these advertisements, sponsors and distributors might cease funding theatre screenings. Recently, The Register Citizen interviewed local cinema owners who expressed concerns about how this bill could potentially harm their establishments. Therefore, it’s crucial to remember the importance of supporting your neighborhood cinemas!
