As a dedicated film enthusiast with a fair share of experience under my belt, I must say that Joker: Folie à Deux left me feeling more like a jester than a critic. Tim Dillon, who lent his voice to the security guard in Arkham Asylum, has echoed sentiments that resonated with me deeply. The film, in my opinion, seems to have been crafted as an experiment by its creators, taking the critiques of the first Joker’s depiction of “male rage” and “nihilism” and pushing them to absurd extremes.
Tim Dillon, who once voiced a character in Arkham Asylum, expressed strong dislike towards the film “Folie à Deux” (The Joker sequel) by calling it the “most disappointing movie ever made” during a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Podcast.
In his analysis, Dillon noted that the sequels were intentionally exaggerated in response to criticisms about the original film’s portrayal of “toxic masculinity” and “nihilism”. He suggested that after the release of the first Joker, there was a lot of discussion like, “Ah, this resonated with misogynistic individuals. This appealed to the undesirable audience. It conveyed harmful messages. It’s all about male anger! It’s all about despair!” These were common themes in various commentaries.
After pondering, I wonder, “What if we took a different approach?” Now, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are nominated for their dance performances that have become quite extraordinary, although Warner Bros. did not market it as a musical. In the Golden Globe categories of Musical or Comedy, they have been submitted as nominees.
Dillon noted that, just like the film crew, even the actors themselves recognized the film’s flaws while it was being produced. During a break for lunch, cast members were puzzled when the story and objectives seemed unclear, especially during scenes filmed at Arkham Asylum where they all wore security guard uniforms. They often debated that the movie lacked a coherent plot.
He said, “We’d hear this crap, and I’d go, ‘What the f**k is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever done.’ We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.”
Despite facing both commercial and critical setbacks, the sequel has earned roughly $38 million in its opening weekend domestically, but saw an 81% drop in its second-weekend earnings at the box office, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Currently, the worldwide box office revenue for Joker: Folie à Deux stands at around $205 million. The movie has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 32%.
