Comedian Eric Andre Reveals He Got A ‘Concussion’ When John Cena Threw Him At The Shelf; Details Here

As a dedicated follower of Eric André’s work, I can confidently say that he is a true embodiment of the adage “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” The man lives for chaos, and his on-screen antics are a testament to his unmatched dedication to comedy.

For Eric André, getting injured is in the line of duty.

Over six seasons on ‘The Eric Andre Show,’ the comedian (now aged 41) has experienced his fair share of mishaps. A particularly cringe-worthy incident from the fifth season stands out, where John Cena propelled André over a shelf. Despite clearing the shelf, the supporting metal frame beneath the shelves gave way and fell on André, resulting in a concussion and a trip to the hospital.

Andre shared with PEOPLE in this week’s issue that getting thrown through a shelf by John Cena during season 5 was quite usual for him. “I managed to make it through the shelf just fine,” he said, “but we failed to secure the shelf frame properly before filming – only the shelves themselves were sandbagged. The metal frame toppled over and hit me on the head. I sustained a concussion and had to be taken to the hospital.”

In a different scene, during a movie stunt in Brooklyn, he actually got hurt when his hand slipped through a window. It’s unclear if he was joking or not when he commented, “I thought I was pounding on the window, but my entire hand went inside instead. It cut me deeply, and I needed stitches. I even had to visit the hospital for that injury.”

Eric Andre’s show: The comedy of chaos where no guest is ever truly ready

Many might recognize the pranks on The Eric Andre Show as a unique, unconventional type of humor.

This program, known as Adult Swim, offers a humorous twist on conventional talk shows. It has welcomed an array of high-profile guest stars like Jon Hamm, Jimmy Kimmel, Natasha Lyonne, and Tinashe. While the humor sometimes pushes boundaries, even the most prepared guests are caught off guard by some unexpected antics.

“No matter how well-researched or devoted fans they might be,” he admits, “when it comes to actually sitting in that chair amidst exploding devices and cockroaches emerging from a coffee mug, all the preparation in the world won’t change the experience.”

“The comic goes on to say that no amount of preparation can make a difference when the ordeal starts, as everyone will respond honestly in such situations. It is crucial for us that people do not pretend or act out.”

Eric André’s Emmy nominations: Over the moon and planning underwater antics

Eric André’s distinctive brand of comedy has landed him two Emmy nominations this year: One is in the category Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and the other for Short Form Comedy, Drama, or Variety Series. Upon hearing the news from a fellow worker at Comedy Central, he was “absolutely thrilled.”

He expresses that, given we’ve been running the show for more than a decade, just receiving the nomination itself is astounding. However, he admits to having a touch of superstition when it comes to such matters. He’ll only truly celebrate if he actually holds one of those trophies in his hands.

If André doesn’t win at the Emmy Awards on September 15th, 2024, he remains optimistic about his show’s future. In fact, he’s already considering inviting Ghislaine Maxwell, as he believes she has interesting tales to share. “He says she’s got some stories to tell,” he explains.

Additionally, André intends to film the whole episode submerged, expressing his view that “it would be both magnificent and dreamlike.”

From on-stage chaos to neat freak, mental health advocate, and discrimination fighter

Beyond his on-stage antics and stand-up performances, Eric André leads a rather ordinary life, a stark contrast to the extraordinary persona he portrays on television.

Initially, the author highlights that André prioritizes his mental well-being. Among the practices he adopts are journaling daily, engaging in regular exercise, ensuring 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night, and frequent therapy sessions. Interestingly, interior design is among his preferred areas of interest.

“He acknowledges that others might find him strange,” he says, further explaining, “Visitors to my place often assume it’s a messy dump, but in reality, I’m incredibly tidy.”

His job encompasses sharing specific messages or issues. On August 20th, he posted a video on Instagram detailing an incident where he experienced racial discrimination at Melbourne Airport in Australia. According to André’s post, he sought a security escort at the airport and was also seeking advice from his followers about discrimination lawyers.

In the video, he expressed that he has no intention of changing his appearance or dressing formally to gain respect. Instead, he believes that he should not be made to feel unwelcome when entering a new country.

From the first season up to the sixth, you can stream “The Eric Andre Show” on Hulu. The 2024 Emmy Awards are set to be broadcast on ABC on Sunday, September 15, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
