Comedian Eric Andre Reveals He Got A ‘Concussion’ When John Cena Threw Him At The Shelf; Details Here

For Eric André, getting injured is in the line of duty.

Over the course of six seasons on ‘The Eric Andre Show,’ comedian Eric Andre, now 41, has experienced his fair share of mishaps. A particularly cringe-worthy incident from season five is when John Cena hurled André over a shelf. Although André managed to clear the shelf, the metal frame supporting it gave way and fell on him, leading to a concussion and a trip to the hospital.

Andre shares with PEOPLE in this week’s edition that getting thrown through a shelf by John Cena during season 5 was quite usual for him. “I managed to get through the shelf alright, but we neglected to secure it – the metal frame beneath – so when it toppled over, it struck my head,” he explains. “As a result, I suffered a concussion and had to visit the hospital.”

In a recent cinematic escapade in the vibrant streets of Brooklyn, I found myself unintentionally embroiled in a prank gone awry. A window mishap left my hand rather compromised. The lines between jest and reality blurred as I exclaimed, “I was attempting to drive a nail into the window, but somehow, both hands went right through.” The glass took its toll, leaving deep lacerations that required immediate attention with stitches. I had no choice but to seek medical assistance at the hospital for this unexpected predicament.

Eric Andre’s show: The comedy of chaos where no guest is ever truly ready

Many viewers might recognize the pranks on The Eric Andre Show as an unconventional, humorous style.

This program is Adult Swim’s unique spin on a conventional talk show format, featuring an impressive array of guest stars like Jon Hamm, Jimmy Kimmel, Natasha Lyonne, and Tinashe. While it’s common to hear some slightly risqué humor from the hosts, even the most seasoned guests are often caught off guard by some unexpected antics.

“Regardless of how much research they’ve done or their fervent fandom, when it comes to sitting in that chair with explosions going off and African hissing cockroaches emerging from a coffee mug, all the preparation in the world doesn’t seem to matter,” he explains.

The comic points out that no amount of preparation can change genuine reactions during a torture scenario. They emphasize that they aim for authenticity and not role-playing.

Eric André’s Emmy nominations: Over the moon and planning underwater antics

Eric André’s unique style of comedy has earned him two Emmy nominations this year: One of them is the Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and the other shall be for the Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series. When one day he found out from a colleague of Comedy Central, he was “over the moon.”

“We’ve been running this show for more than a decade, and just to be nominated is an incredible honor,” he admits. “However, I tend to be a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to such matters. I’ll only truly rejoice if I actually hold one of those trophies in my hands.”

Regardless of whether André doesn’t win at the Emmy Awards on September 15th, 2024, he remains optimistic about the show’s future. In fact, he has extended an invitation to Ghislaine Maxwell, believing she might have interesting tales to share. As he puts it, “She’s got stories to tell.”

Moving forward, I’m excited about my vision to film the whole episode submerged underwater. To me, it would create a sense of grandeur and dreamlike quality, as I envision it being nothing short of breathtaking.

From on-stage chaos to neat freak, mental health advocate, and discrimination fighter

Beyond his on-stage antics and television performances, Eric André leads a rather ordinary life – a stark contrast to the outrageous persona he portrays onscreen.

Initially, the author highlights that André takes great care of his psychological well-being. Some activities he engages in include journaling daily, regular exercise, ensuring 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night, and frequent therapy sessions. Moreover, interior design is among his preferred fields of interest.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I’ll confess that others often perceive me as a bit eccentric. Yet, when guests step into my humble abode, they anticipate a messy den, unaware that beneath the surface lies an immaculate, fastidious soul.

His job includes sharing specific messages or issues. On August 20th, he posted a video on Instagram detailing an incident where he experienced racial discrimination at Melbourne Airport in Australia. As André stated in his post, he requested a security escort at the airport and was seeking advice from his followers about discrimination lawyers.

He expressed in the video, “I prefer not to change my hairstyle or wear a three-piece suit just to gain respect, and I believe I should not be forced to feel unwelcome when entering a country.”

From the first season up to the sixth installment of “The Eric Andre Show” can be streamed on Hulu. The upcoming Emmy Awards in 2024 are scheduled to broadcast on ABC on Sunday, September 15, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
