Colman Domingo on Former Kang Casting Rumors: ‘I Want a Role to Be Mine’

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Jonathan Majors made his initial appearance as Victor Timely in 2021 and later portrayed Kang the Conqueror in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, which marked the start of Phase 5, or the commencement of the Multiverse Storyline, in 2023.

‘The film ‘Quantumania’ didn’t perform well at the box office, making matters worse, shortly after its premiere, the actor playing the main villain – who was expected to play a significant role in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe phases – was arrested and eventually convicted for assault charges.

Initially, there was strong speculation that Kang’s role would be reassigned to another actor, and his narrative was expected to persist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has been strongly suggested that Colman Domingo could take over the role of Kang from Majors, a possibility that Domingo himself seemed to allude to earlier. In previous statements, he hinted that discussions about “a certain role” may have taken place between his team and Marvel Studios.

For quite some time, discussions with Marvel about certain aspects of the MCU have been held by my team and myself. Whether these conversations are fact or fiction, I can’t confirm. However, I trust that if my team presents something to me, it’s usually genuine. Therefore, I can’t say for certain, but I am open to a dialogue about this topic.

Currently, Domingo was a featured guest on Joshua Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, and Horowitz expressed his belief that the actor would be a great fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Domingo acknowledged this by mentioning that he has previously lent his voice to Norman Osborn in ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’, although it’s important to note that this series is not connected to the MCU.

As a passionate film critic, I can’t help but confess my delight in bringing Norman, the legendary Marvel villain, to life through voice acting. However, I must admit that the thought of stepping into this iconic role in live-action is nothing short of exhilarating!

I’d be thrilled to bring that character to life on the big screen, but I’m genuinely enjoying the experience as it is. I find the animation captivating, and I can’t wait to portray Norman Osborn, then later, witness his transformation into the Green Goblin in future seasons – it promises to be quite fascinating!

Later on, Horowitz inquired about the many speculations concerning him and Kang, and if he ever took any steps towards them as part of his team.

Upon observing the rumors circulating on the internet, his curiosity piqued and he inquired from his team whether any secret discussions were underway. Nevertheless, they reassured him that no such conversations had transpired, or so it seemed to them.

Domingo admitted to having a discussion with Marvel execs about possible characters, but in the end, he conveyed that it didn’t sit well with him to fill another actor’s role. Instead, he emphasized that he’d rather embrace roles that are distinctly his own, as opposed to slipping into someone else’s part.

After a while, when it kept appearing in the news and on social media platforms such as Twitter, I found myself questioning, “Could this be real? Is it me they’re discussing?” I even reached out to my team, asking, “Are there discussions happening that I’m unaware of?” To which they responded, “No, we aren’t aware of anything.” This left me wondering, “Are you guys being secretive about something?

1) They didn’t, as far as I can tell. However, there had been discussions suggesting a potential collaboration between me and Marvel. As a result, we arranged a meeting with Marvel’s leaders. So I did attend that meeting. We openly discussed various aspects of Marvel, including the Kang rumors.

I strongly believed that I wanted to focus on energy-related tasks and projects that were meaningful and harmonious. However, I had this sense of unease, as if I was stepping into someone else’s shoes instead of creating something new and unique of my own. It seemed like the discussion about my perspective wasn’t fully considered. To be clear, I don’t know if I was even part of the conversation. That’s why I want to start from scratch, build something entirely new that’s mine. Despite ongoing discussions, this is what I still desire.
