Colleen Hoover Says She’s “Almost Embarrassed” to Have Written ‘It Ends With Us’ – Here’s Why

Colleen Hoover has expressed her frustration with the issues surrounding the film adaptation of her novel, It Ends With Us. She’s been open about the difficulties and isn’t holding back her feelings.

The author recently told Elle magazine she’s been very bothered by the recent drama, particularly how the legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni overshadowed discussions about the movie itself.

Released in 2024, the film was a huge hit, earning $350 million worldwide. However, instead of focusing on the movie’s success, attention quickly turned to a growing conflict between the two lead actors.

Lively is suing Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, alleging sexual harassment and claiming they attempted to harm her career after she spoke up about problems at work. The lawsuit goes to trial in March 2026. Baldoni denies the allegations and has filed a $400 million countersuit against Lively.

Hoover admitted to Elle that the entire situation feels incredibly overwhelming, describing it as a chaotic spectacle. She expressed sadness over the real-life impact it’s had on the people involved, noting that it has significantly affected some of the actors’ careers and caused genuine emotional distress.

Although she was a producer on the film and spent time on set, Hoover says she was unaware of any problems during production. She is now preparing to give a legal testimony and is trying to avoid getting involved in the current controversy.

She shared something really insightful with me. She said she has a story of her own, but she doesn’t want to share it publicly, and definitely doesn’t want to make anyone else look bad to make herself feel better. She also feels like things have escalated so much that there’s nothing anyone – even her – can do to change how people perceive the situation now.

The recent events have deeply affected Hoover’s personal connection to her book, which was based on her mother’s life story. Revisiting the story after the controversy has been emotionally difficult for both of them. Hoover explained that thinking about the book now brings up painful memories, like PTSD. Seeing her mother deal with the consequences of the movie adaptation has been particularly upsetting for her.

Colleen Hoover now says she feels awkward telling people she’s the author of It Ends With Us. In an interview with Elle, she explained that she usually just says she’s a writer and avoids mentioning the book specifically. Hoover hopes she’ll be more comfortable talking about it once the current legal issues are resolved, but right now, she feels the lawsuits have completely taken over the focus from the book itself.

I’m so excited to see Colleen Hoover dominating Hollywood! It’s amazing how popular her stories are becoming. Regretting You has already made $82 million as a movie with Paramount, and now Verity and Reminders of Him are getting the big-screen treatment too – they’re scheduled to come out in 2026! It’s incredible to see her work reaching so many people.
