Originally slated to direct “Star Wars: Episode IX”, Colin Trevorrow, has confessed that he’s found it challenging to emotionally reconnect with the distant galaxy, but that has changed recently.
Trevorrow Says He’s Struggled to Engage With Disney Star Wars
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Trevorrow mentioned that the show Andor is what sparked his enthusiasm once more.
Trevorrow clarified that he’s aware of Andor’s brilliance, but hasn’t watched it yet. Instead, he and his son plan to binge-watch the series this summer. However, he admitted that due to personal reasons, he’s found it hard to connect with anything Star Wars recently.
Regardless of the gap, Trevorrow commended the series “Andor” and its creators, attributing it as the one that has drawn him back in.
To the team behind the series ‘Andor‘, it seems they’ve managed to reel me back in. I must admit, their work is nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m eagerly anticipating seeing it,” he expressed.
Fans Still Curious About Duel of the Fates
Trevorrow was well-known for being replaced from Episode IX due to creative disagreements with Lucasfilm. His initial concept, Duel of the Fates, became available online in 2020 and garnered a surprisingly favorable response from fans, with many expressing their preference for it over The Rise of Skywalker that eventually came out.
The link between Andor and the creator’s work is apt. Similarly to Trevorrow’s script, Andor has been highly commended for its realistic atmosphere, complex narrative, and deep emotional resonance – elements that fans felt were lacking in the sequel series.
What was Duel of the Fates about?
Originally penned by Colin Trevorrow, the script for “Star Wars: Episode IX” was titled “Duel of the Fates“. He wrote this before being replaced from the project. Unlike “The Rise of Skywalker”, Trevorrow’s version did not bring back Emperor Palpatine or alter Rey’s ancestry. Instead, Rey in this story continued as an ordinary individual, grappling with her identity and the implications of being a Jedi amidst a war-torn galaxy. This script emphasized legacy through deeds rather than bloodline, portraying Rey carving out her unique path, eventually choosing to reject both the Sith and the ancient Jedi order.
On one side, Kylo Ren wholeheartedly accepts the dark side, rejecting any chance at redemption. Haunted by Luke Skywalker’s spectral Force presence and consumed by ambition for greater power, he seeks ancient Sith wisdom on a barren planet and learns from an old, nearly forgotten Sith master named Tor Valum. In contrast, the Resistance takes their battle against the First Order to a more realistic, gritty level, with a significant portion of the story revolving around a rebellion among Coruscant’s citizens, now living under oppressive industrial conditions. The conclusion sees Rey and Kylo clashing on Mortis—the legendary Force planet from The Clone Wars—leading to Kylo’s demise and Rey forging a new, self-reliant path.
What’s next for Colin Trevorrow?
Trevorrow directed the film titled “Deep Cover,” which debuted on Prime Video on Thursday. This action-comedy centers around Kat, a comedy instructor played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who starts doubting her chances at achieving success. When an undercover cop, portrayed by Sean Bean, presents her with an opportunity of a lifetime, she enlists two of her students, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed, to infiltrate London’s criminal underworld by posing as dangerous criminals themselves.
Apart from penning and supervising Halcyon, an upcoming sci-fi television series airing on Amazon, he was also involved in the project adaptation from Christopher Long’s graphic novel, “Hiding In Time”. The show is categorized as a suspenseful and paranoid sci-fi thriller. It revolves around the idea of the Witness Protection Program transferring families to different historical periods. A plot twist unfolds when a conspiracy surfaces after the system, which was believed to be flawless, gets compromised.
Trevorrow is currently working on an as-yet-unnamed conspiracy thriller at Paramount, which centers around a journalist based in Las Vegas during the late 1980s who stumbles upon secrets about the mysterious military site in the Nevada desert called Area 51.
