Colin Firth’s Lockerbie: A Search For Truth Slammed as ‘Tragedy Porn’ by Pan Am Victims

‘Lockerbie Unveiled: A Quest for Justice’ – This British television drama is a dramatization of the real events surrounding the Lockerbie bombing in 1988. The series, helmed by directors Otto Bathurst and Jim Loach, features Colin Firth portraying Jim Swire, a man whose daughter, Flora, tragically lost her life on Pan Am Flight 103.

The story unfolds as Swire seeks justice following the bombing that took 270 lives, among them his daughter’s, and left a lasting impact on the tiny Scottish town of Lockerbie. Tragically, 38 minutes after takeoff from London, the plane was obliterated by an explosive device, with debris falling onto residential areas, claiming additional lives of 11 residents. The series debuted on British screens on January 2, 2025, and made its U.S. premiere on Peacock.

Shortly following its premiere, the series drew intense criticism for sensationalizing a tragic event. On December 21, 1988, while Mary Lou Ciulla was preparing dinner, she heard shocking news that a Pan Am flight had crashed in Scotland. Her worry intensified as she feared her husband, Frank, could have been among the passengers. Michelle, their daughter, was summoned from school. After a long wait, they received the devastating information—Frank was one of the 270 victims who perished in the crash.

Thirty-six years after the incident, Michelle and Mary Lou sat down to watch “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth.” As a representative of the victims, Michelle had collaborated extensively with the producers to maintain authenticity. However, even with these efforts, she was taken aback by the vivid portrayal of the plane crash in the series, confessing her surprise to Deadline.

Michelle Ciulla Lipkin voiced her strong disapproval and unease towards the series’ depiction of the bombing, labeling it as “exploitative portrayal” and stating, “This is appalling“. She found the vivid scenes, such as bodies falling from the sky, to be a deeply disturbing reenactment of her most traumatic experiences. She further commented that it was inappropriate to turn the tragedy into an action-packed movie.

I glanced at my mother, expressing my dismay by saying, “This is exploitative drama. It’s appalling.” They seem to be focusing on the most distressing parts of our past… The excessive display of bodies and the sensationalized aspects of it, turning it into a violent action film with things falling from the sky. Such depiction isn’t necessary.

Lipkin stated that Sky and Peacock deliberately chose to intensely dramatize the crash, a decision that she found distressing and re-traumatizing. Although the producers were candid about their goals, this experience left her with advice for other victims: they might prefer to avoid the initial episode and any recaps. When asked if her concerns were disregarded, Lipkin replied, “We had meaningful discussions, but it was already past the point where any changes could be made.

Regarding the allegations, a representative from Sky explained, “We understand this topic is highly sensitive for many, so we handled the storytelling with great care and respect.” They further clarified that they collaborated extensively with families of victims and support groups during production and even before the series was made available. As a result, each episode contained warnings for potentially distressing content.
