As a dedicated fan who has followed Colin Farrell’s career since his days as Bouquet de Pêche in “Tigerland,” I am thrilled to hear about his potential return as the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel. Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot was a standout performance, and I can’t wait to see where they take the character next.
It appears that Colin Farrell could reprise his role as The Penguin in the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” (2022) based on hints he shared during a recent interview. Given that the spinoff series “The Penguin” is nearing its first season finale, there’s a strong possibility that Farrell may once again step into the dark alleys of Gotham for another Batman film.
During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Farrell mentioned that he had heard rumors about Penguin potentially being part of The Batman 2, despite not having read the script himself. He shared his excitement about the possibility, saying, “I don’t know what the second film will be about, but I’ve heard there might be a role for Penguin. I haven’t seen the script yet, but it would be intriguing to see where we continue the story.
He was astonished by how the storyline changed with respect to his character’s growth, particularly the recent twists in HBO’s The Penguin series. The episodes unfold a week after the events from Batman and portray Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobblepot climbing the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underworld.
Farrell commented, “So much piping has been installed already. I wonder what the next steps will be. Yet, he could turn out to be quite distinct.
Currently, director Matt Reeves has made it clear that his vision for The Batman extends beyond a single film. In fact, he aims to develop this series into a trilogy. As per Collider’s report, production on the next installment is set to start next year. Furthermore, it appears that the Penguin has been earmarked for a more substantial role within this series, with a storyline centered around Gotham City.
In addition, he emphasized that the initial movie didn’t delve into Robert Pattinson’s Batman’s origins but instead focused on establishing other characters like the Penguin, whose origins would be saved for later storylines. Essentially, Reeves explained, the HBO spinoff is designed to fill in gaps while simultaneously diving deeper into the vast roster of Gotham’s nefarious characters.
The eight-episode series “The Penguin,” penned by Lauren LeFranc, showcases Colin Farrell’s character, Oz, and his relentless ambition that propelled him up the ladder of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Alongside Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, and Clancy Brown are also part of the cast, among others.
