Colin Farrell Reflects on His ‘Horror’ Amid the Decision to Put His Disabled Son in Long-Term Care: ‘It’s Tricky’

Colin Farrell has shared the motivation for putting his 21-year-old son, who has Angelman Syndrome, into permanent care. Earlier, the Irish actor disclosed that following intensive medical advice from professionals, his son was diagnosed with this specific condition.

Additionally, he mentioned that at first, their older child had been mistakenly diagnosed with cerebral palsy, adding an extra layer of complexity when it came to deciding on the appropriate care for him.

Medical establishments explain that Angelman Syndrome is an uncommon disorder which impacts the nervous system, leading to both physical and intellectual impairments.

During an interview with Candis Magazine, the actor playing Batman admitted that he’s faced criticism over his parenting choices regarding his son. He explained, “It can be challenging; some parents might express, ‘I prefer to raise my child personally.’ And I understand and appreciate their sentiments.

He continued, “My fear is, what if I suffer a heart attack tomorrow, and tragically, James’ mother, Kim, gets into a car accident and doesn’t make it—leaving James all alone?

The actor shared that, given their son’s health situation, they (the actor and Kim) chose to transition James into a more capable care center while they are still around. Farrell voiced worry that once they pass away, there might not be anyone left to look after their 21-year-old son.

The Penguin spokesperson shared with the news agency, “Our wish is for him to discover a place that offers him a fulfilling and joyful existence, where he feels a sense of belonging.

Additionally, during an interview with People Magazine, the movie star revealed that James “was unable to sit unassisted, didn’t crawl, and I believe he was about 18 months old when we took him for a thorough examination. He was then diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

In these types of instances, the actor pointed out that it’s often challenging to make an accurate diagnosis because several symptoms are shared among various health conditions.
