Colin Farrell Opens Up About Wearing Grueling Prosthetics for The Penguin: ‘I F—ing Wanted It To Be Finished’

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Colin Farrell‘s journey as The Penguin is nothing short of impressive – and exhausting! Having dabbled in various roles, I can relate to his sentiments about the physical and mental toll of wearing prosthetics for extended periods.

Colin Farrell’s role as The Penguin in the HBO series has had quite a twisty path, as it appears he harbors some hesitations about returning to the demanding prosthetics work that comes with his character depiction. Despite enjoying the acting experience of portraying Oswald Cobblepot, Farrell did acknowledge that prolonged periods wearing prosthetics at the end of filming became increasingly challenging, both mentally and physically exhausting.

During an interview with Total Film, Farrell shared that the numerous hours spent in a makeup chair eventually took a toll on him. Despite his initial excitement, the heavy prosthetic face pieces he had to wear eventually outweighed it. However, he made full use of creative freedom during filming. As he longed for completion, Farrell expressed his frustrations experienced throughout the production process.

He shared with the media, “I thoroughly enjoyed it, yet towards the end, it became slightly overwhelming for me. Eventually, I found myself complaining vocally to anyone around me, expressing my desire for it to come to an end.

Farrell expressed gratitude for the intriguing tasks presented by the series and the individuals who made it happen, specifically Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner, and Mike Marino responsible for prosthetics. Although he recognized their inventiveness in creating work designed to give viewers an enjoyable experience, he admitted that the repeated application of makeup had left him feeling tired.

Despite feeling fortunate to be in such a character, the tediousness of the makeup process made him question if he’d ever wish to take on this role again. Speaking to the media, he expressed, “I was still grateful and still humbled – I used to watch Burgess Meredith, and then Danny DeVito became my Penguin, so being a part of that storytelling legacy, I truly felt honored.

In contemplating another season or film as The Penguin, he remarked, “Perhaps in a year’s time I will. However, upon completion, I felt, ‘I have no desire to wear that suit and don that headpiece ever again.’

One week after Robert Pattinson’s “The Batman” (2022), we shift our attention to Oz Cobblepot, delving into his transformation into the mastermind behind Gotham’s criminal empire. Matt Reeves has indicated a potential interest in this storyline, but he needs some time to recuperate from the demanding makeup process of the initial film.

The eight-episode series will be aired on HBO, starting from September 19, 2024, and ending on November 10, 2024. Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, and Colin Farrell are some of the notable actors in this production, with Farrell playing the main character, The Penguin.
