As a seasoned researcher with a knack for blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, I find the launch of Coinbase’s “Based Agent” framework incredibly intriguing. With my background in coding and a deep understanding of smart contracts, I can’t wait to dive into this new tool and explore its potential applications.
Coinbase has introduced a new system called “Based Agent” which allows users to swiftly create their own AI-driven cryptocurrency agent, equipped with a wallet on the Base blockchain, within approximately three minutes. According to Coinbase’s product manager Lincoln Murr, who made this announcement, this framework is designed to streamline the process of establishing AI agents capable of performing various on-chain tasks such as trading, swapping, and staking.
Murr showcased this tool in a video shared on X on October 26th, explaining that Based Agent offers a user-friendly model for creating AI-powered bots – automated systems designed to perform specific tasks – equipped with various smart contract capabilities. After the agent is set up, it can interact with smart contracts, handle trades, execute swaps, and even register its own domain name on the Base platform.
The Agent was constructed using various tools: software development kits (SDKs) from Coinbase’s developer platform, OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT), and Replit, a platform for AI-driven software development and deployment. To initiate, users simply need to acquire an API key from both Coinbase and OpenAI, and then duplicate the Replit template. This allows them to begin customizing these agents with their desired features.

According to James Ross, the founder of Mode Network, as highlighted in Ciaran Lyons’ report for Cointelegraph, it’s likely that intelligent AI agents will soon control a majority of blockchain transactions. In his post on X dated October 20th, Ross forecasted this shift might happen within the next six to twelve months, with over 80% of such transactions being managed by these AI agents.
