Coeur Mining (CDE +5.31%) had a good little quarter. They dug up shiny things, and people paid for them. So it goes. The stock jumped, because that’s what stocks do when shiny things are involved.
The number crunchers expected 32 cents a share in earnings, on 617.1 million in sales. Coeur delivered 34 cents and 678.8 million. Not a bad haul. It’s just dirt and pressure, really. And a little bit of hope.
A Dig in the Dirt
Gold accounted for 63% of the revenue, silver the rest. Quarterly sales climbed 121%. A big number. But numbers are just symbols, aren’t they? They don’t weigh anything.
For the whole year, Coeur pulled in 2.1 billion. That’s a lot of money. Enough to make some people very comfortable, and others…not so much. A 96% increase year-over-year. The world keeps turning, and the numbers keep going up, or down. It’s rarely sideways.
The “generally accepted accounting principles” earnings weren’t quite as sparkly as the “pro forma” ones. They rarely are. Accountants have to be careful, you see. They deal in realities. But Coeur still managed 29 cents a share in Q4, a 93% jump, and 95 cents for the year – a 533% increase. A truly impressive number, if you ignore the base effect. Which most people do.
They hit a record for gold and silver production. 419,046 ounces of gold, 17.9 million of silver. The earth yielded its treasures. It always does, eventually. And the prices of both metals are, shall we say, enthusiastic. It’s a good time to be in the shiny rock business. So it goes.
What Does It All Mean?
Looking ahead, Coeur expects to dig up between 390,000 and 460,000 ounces of gold next year, a modest 1.4% increase. Silver production should be between 18.2 and 21.3 million ounces – up more than 10%. Growth is slowing. Everything slows down, eventually.
They didn’t say much about profits, though. They rarely do. It’s easier to talk about ounces. The truth is, profits depend more on what people are willing to pay than on anything Coeur does. It’s a simple equation, really. Desire, scarcity, and a bit of luck.
If gold and silver stay expensive, Coeur should have another good year. But prices are fickle. And the world is full of surprises. So it goes. The market will decide. It always does. And we’re all just along for the ride.
