As a retired Hollywood screenwriter with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the use of AI to depict deceased characters in modern productions is a topic that evokes mixed emotions within me. On one hand, it’s fascinating to witness the advancements in technology that make such feats possible. On the other, it raises questions about the ethics and sensitivity involved in using this technology to bring back beloved characters who have passed away.
Using AI to depict a deceased person’s likeness continues to be a topic of discussion, unfortunately. There are actors like the still-living (thankfully) Robert Downey, Jr. who say they absolutely do not give studios permission to resurrect or continue their careers via AI cameos. Then, there are other cases where it is being done to serve a narrative purpose, which is terrible or needed, depending on whom you ask. The latest news is that Cobra Kai season six part two used AI to bring back Mr. Miyagi, the famous The Karate Kid character. (Thank you SlashFilm for bringing this to our attention!)
Since the passing of Pat Morita in 2005, his character from the film has been a spiritual presence. However, recent advancements in AI technology have brought Mr. Miyagi back to life, figuratively speaking, for the series Cobra Kai. Here’s what co-creator Josh Heald explained about why this was crucial:
This season, we’re delving deeper into the mysterious influence of previously unseen details about Mr. Miyagi’s life – aspects that our protagonist, Daniel, has been unaware of until now. As we explore these new revelations, we’ll be diving deeper into Daniel’s thoughts, particularly his confusion and introspection over what he didn’t know about Mr. Miyagi. This exploration may shape and reshape Daniel’s perspective on his mentor.
It’s intriguing, but it’s unclear how Morita’s family and past cast members feel about this situation. However, Netflix and the show’s creators assert that they portrayed his likeness in the most respectful manner. The final chapter of this story is yet to unfold, and we’ll have to wait until 2025 to see its conclusion.
