The team behind the popular series Cobra Kai is planning to revive Knight Rider for the big screen. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are in negotiations to pen and possibly direct a new film adaptation of the iconic 1980s action show featuring Michael Knight and his intelligent car, KITT.
Hurwitz announced on Instagram that he’s eager to dive back into an ’80s classic, Knight Rider. He’s thrilled about this collaboration with 87 North and Spyglass, and is looking forward to working again with Universal Pictures, as well as rejoining old friends.
Knight Rider on the Big Screen
The “Knight Rider” development is taking place at Universal, under the guidance of producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch from 87North Productions, who are renowned for “The Fall Guy.” Meanwhile, the team behind “Cobra Kai” will be involved in production through their Counterbalance Entertainment label. Additionally, Gary Barber and Chris Stone from Spyglass are also participating in the project.
From 1982 to 1986, the popular television series “Knight Rider,” created by Glen A. Larson, aired on NBC. The show, which significantly shaped the 80s, starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a law enforcement agent for an organization called FLAG. Michael’s partner was KITT, a highly advanced and nearly indestructible Trans Am car with artificial intelligence. Together, they pursued criminals who operated outside the legal system. KITT could communicate verbally, while Michael often spoke through his watch.
Previous Attempts and New Direction
For a considerable period of time, Universal has been attempting to transform “Knight Rider” into a stage play. An earlier script was penned by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, however, this rendition did not progress further. The latest attempt from the minds behind “Cobra Kai” is being kept confidential (as reported by THR), but given their previous works, audiences can anticipate a creative reinterpretation that respects the original series while also expanding upon it.
From Karate Kid to Knight Rider
Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald garnered recognition from their work on the “Harold & Kumar” films and “American Reunion,” later crafting “Cobra Kai,” a sequel to the “Karate Kid” tale. This series proved popular on Netflix, blending established characters with fresh ones, and received praise from critics, even earning an Emmy nomination.
After completing its sixth and last season, the trio involved in Cobra Kai is now focusing on fresh ventures. Alongside Knight Rider, they are also engaged in creating a new Harold & Kumar series, and have devised a spin-off of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount.
In addition, they weren’t involved with the recent film that failed, which featured Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan in the leading roles.
