Clint Eastwood Took a Big Risk Starring in a Comedy Everyone Warned Him Against

Clint Eastwood is well-known for his roles as strong, serious characters, so it was a surprise when he starred in a comedy in 1978. Called Every Which Way But Loose and directed by James Fargo, the film featured Eastwood as a truck driver searching for romance, accompanied by an orangutan.

The actor said nearly everyone cautioned him against taking the role – even his agents and friends. While critics weren’t sure about it, audiences really enjoyed the movie, and it became a box office success.

Clint Eastwood recently told The Guardian that deciding to take the role was surprisingly difficult. He admitted, “I’ve definitely made some unusual choices in my career. Everyone – my agent and others – strongly advised me against doing that film.”

Eastwood was already well-known as a strong, action-focused actor. Deciding to try comedy meant he had to be self-assured and brave enough to step outside his comfort zone.

Clint Eastwood said that after making films like Dirty Harry, people told him he was known for action and adventure roles, but he questioned what he truly was as an actor. He admitted he wasn’t sure. He then decided he wanted to create a film that would appeal to a younger generation.

I wanted to connect with a younger audience and create a film kids could enjoy. I aimed for something a bit more understated. The movie had a quirky appeal – a man confides in an orangutan and ends up losing his girlfriend. It was all a little unusual and different, and it just felt like the right project to do at the time.

Let me tell you, directing an orangutan presented some unique hurdles. Clint Eastwood described the experience as being similar to working with a six-year-old! Apparently, these incredible creatures develop to roughly the intelligence of a seven-year-old child, but their attention span is definitely kid-level. What that meant for us on set was needing to nail the shot on the very first take – no retakes! It was a charming challenge, to say the least.

Though not one of Clint Eastwood’s more dramatic films, Every Which Way But Loose remains a popular and fun movie – a true crowd-pleaser. It was so successful that a sequel was made in 1980, and that one also did very well in theaters.

The film has become a beloved classic, and it’s still remembered as a time when Clint Eastwood wasn’t afraid to try something new. He proved he could captivate viewers with different types of roles, moving beyond his typical action hero persona.
