Clint Eastwood is well-known for playing complex characters who operate in morally ambiguous situations. Early in his career, films like Dirty Harry established him as a pioneer of the American anti-hero, portraying individuals willing to bend or break the law to do what they felt was right.

This tendency to play flawed, troubled men continued throughout his long career, with Eastwood often taking on roles of characters haunted by their pasts or desperately seeking redemption. Although he’s most famous for Westerns and thrillers, he almost starred in a very different kind of film.

During the early stages of making the 1978 movie Superman, Eastwood was considered for the role of the Man of Steel. He ultimately turned it down, explaining that while he thought the part could be great for someone, it just didn’t feel right for him. Christopher Reeve ended up playing Superman, and Eastwood’s decision wasn’t because he disliked comic books.

Interestingly, the famous actor always favored a more complex character: Namor the Sub-Mariner. He’s spoken about being a fan of Namor since childhood, explaining that he always liked the character and collected all the comics.

Namor’s aggressive fighting style and fierce commitment to protecting his underwater kingdom closely align with the strong, often stern, personalities of Eastwood’s most iconic roles. While Namor recently appeared in Marvel movies, Eastwood is now too old to play the king of Atlantis himself.

However, Namor’s ruthless approach to justice – prioritizing his own code over conventional laws – would be a natural fit for Eastwood’s cool demeanor and on-screen presence. While he may not be able to star as Namor, many fans believe he’d be the ideal director for a film exploring the anti-hero’s uncompromising nature.

At 95 years old, Clint Eastwood is still a major force in Hollywood, and he shows no signs of retirement. His latest film, the legal thriller Juror #2, was a hit on Max after being released in late 2024. The movie, starring Nicholas Hoult, tells the story of a juror who suspects he may be connected to the crime he’s helping to decide, and it’s been praised as a return to Eastwood’s signature style of straightforward, impactful drama.

Despite talk that Juror #2 would be his last film, Eastwood has stated he’s still creatively engaged and is already working on a new project he’s excited about. While details are being kept secret by his production company, Malpaso Productions, he’s committed to making original films instead of sequels. He recently said there’s no reason someone can’t improve with age, and he intends to continue directing as long as he’s able.

Lately, beyond directing, I’ve noticed Clint Eastwood seems really focused on family and his connection with the American Film Institute, which is lovely to see. He’s still pretty outspoken about Hollywood’s obsession with sequels and reboots – he often says he’d rather try something original or just not work at all! But honestly, with his mind still so sharp and that famously fast pace on set, everyone – myself included – is on the edge of our seats to see what this master of the single-take has planned next.
