Claire Danes has shared a surprising opinion about her breakout role in the 1990s series My So-Called Life. She recently revealed that the show nearly didn’t get made, and she now wonders if that might have been a good thing.
Janeane Garofalo recently discussed why her show remains popular years later during an interview on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast. She described the show as groundbreaking and ahead of its time, even suggesting it was almost never created and had to fight to get made. These comments gained attention because the series is now widely considered a classic.
My So-Called Life premiered on ABC in 1994 and centered around Angela Chase, a high school student. Claire Danes starred as Angela, a thoughtful and introverted teenager who often narrated her feelings. The show also launched the careers of actors Jared Leto and Wilson Cruz. Though it lasted only one season, with a total of 19 episodes, it remains a memorable and influential series.
Danes shared on the podcast that the show’s strength lay in its deep exploration of a teenage girl’s emotions and experiences. She described the script she read for her audition as incredibly personal and moving. She explained, “It was powerful to see someone articulate feelings I hadn’t been able to put into words myself.” She praised creator Winnie Holzman for crafting a character who felt authentic and genuine.
News broke in early 2025 that Claire Danes and Meredith Holzman are collaborating once more on a new HBO drama, titled The Applebaum Curse. Danes will star in the series and also be an executive producer, while Holzman is writing and showrunning. Holzman has expressed how much it means to her to work with Danes again, stating that while it’s not a reboot, reuniting on this project feels similar in spirit.
Beyond this new project, both Danes and Holzman have been keeping busy – Danes with television roles and family, and Holzman continuing her work, including the upcoming Wicked movies. Their collaboration on this project has generated a lot of excitement.
