33rd Expedition of Clair Obscur boasts a combat system brimming with intricacy, offering countless customizable builds and configurations that cater to almost any player’s preference. However, among these various options, one build stands out as particularly effective – the Burn build. This build inflicts the “Burn” status on enemies at the beginning of their turns, causing significant damage over the course of a battle.
In Expedition 33 of Clair Obscur, we’ve crafted what we consider an optimal setup for inflicting Burn damage. However, it’s important to note that this setup isn’t something you can immediately implement at the start of the game. It calls for specific characters, weapons, abilities, and Pictos that aren’t available until later stages of the game. Nevertheless, even in its early stages, it packs a significant punch, and as you gather more necessary components, it becomes even more potent.
Expedition 33 best Burn build: Party lineup
In this Burn build setup, the team primarily consists of Lune, Verso, and Maelle as key players. Lune, with her extensive repertoire of Fire abilities that induce Burn, stands out among the trio. Maelle is present to intensify the Burn status and deal massive damage, while Verso brings the team together by offering affordable Burn induction and a multitude of supportive skills.
This construction can adapt, but it works best once Verso acquires the specific weapon for optimal performance. Meanwhile, other characters can take up this role temporarily using their Fire abilities until Verso becomes fully effective.
Expedition 33 best Burn build: Best Lune build
In essence, Lune serves as the heart of our team, consistently dealing Burn damage on each turn through her diverse array of skills, some targeting individuals and others affecting the entire group. Furthermore, she possesses healing abilities that may not be required frequently but can prove vital when we find ourselves in a tough situation.
Lune Burn build: Weapon
Lune’s preferred weapon is Lighterim, which belongs to the Fire category, focusing on Defense and Agility attributes. It’s crucial to enhance these abilities because they not only amplify Lune’s attack power but also allow her to take action more frequently and extend her survival time in battles.
Lighterim stands out mainly due to its Level 4 skill, which lessens the action points (AP) required for Fire abilities by 1. Although this may not seem significant, it allows you to employ her weaker Burn spells from the onset of a battle, without having to accumulate any AP initially. Moreover, this feature proves beneficial with her advanced Burn skills and enhances her overall consistency in combat. At level 10, it offers a 20% enhancement in Fire damage, while at level 20, it begins the fight with an Ice stain, further amplifying her damage potential beyond the Burn.
Lune Burn build: Skills
By the end of the game, you should have the following skills on Lune for this build:
- Wildfire
- Hell
- Mayhem
- Healing Light
- Revitalization
- Rebirth
As a gamer, I’ve found Wildfire to be my trusted Fire spell in combat. It dishes out moderate Fire damage and inflicts 3 Burns on all enemies, making it an essential tool until I acquire Hell, which deals immense Fire damage, slaps on 5 burns per hit, and strikes twice! However, the 9 AP cost might seem steep early on, but it’s easily manageable as the game progresses. Lune’s other abilities are pretty straightforward: Mayhem can shatter when she has accumulated 4 stains, while Healing Light, Revitalization, and Rebirth can come in handy for healing and reviving allies in a tight spot.
Lune Burn build: Pictos and Luminas
By the end of the game, you should have the following Pictos or Luminas on Lune for this build:
- Double Burn
- Painted Power
- First Strike
- Critical Burn
- Energising Cleanse
- Energising Start (1-4)
- Energising Turn
- Dead Energy
In this tactic, Double Burn is pivotal since it multiplies the Burn damage inflicted each application. This enhancement works well with Wildfire, but significantly amplifies Lune’s Hell skill to an enormous degree, causing a total of 20 Burn damages per use. Painted Power enables her to dish out more than 9,999 damages, and this increased capacity applies to Burn damages as well. Critical Burn raises the likelihood of scoring critical hits on enemies that are already ablaze, aiming for all of them in an ideal scenario.
As a devoted admirer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I ensure her Action Points (AP) are maximized throughout every battle. The Energizing Start provides me with 1 AP at the beginning of each fight for each instance I have equipped, while Energizing Turn grants me 1 AP at the start of each turn. Energizing Cleanse nullifies the first status effect she encounters and rewards me with an additional 2 AP, making it particularly beneficial in late-game scenarios. Dead Energy, on the other hand, awards me a hefty 3 AP whenever an opponent is defeated.
As a dedicated fan, I can attest that First Strike is an invaluable asset for Lune in combat scenarios. This skill grants her the advantage of initiating battles first, which is particularly beneficial given her arsenal of Pictos or Luminas. With these items equipped, Lune kicks off each fight already possessing enough Action Points (AP) to unleash Hell on her opening salvo, thereby establishing Burn before her adversaries even get a chance to strike back. To maintain the Burn throughout subsequent turns, she can either opt for Hell or Wildfire, depending on her available AP by the time it’s her turn again.
Expedition 33 best Burn build: Best Maelle build
In other words, Maelle excels at inflicting massive damage due to her unique positioning trick. Moreover, she can deal colossal Burn damage during the final stages of the game, making her an ideal choice for this specific setup.
Maelle Burn build: Weapon
In this build, Facesum functions exceptionally well for Maelle due to its Burn-enhancing capabilities. These abilities amplify the Burn damage Maelle can inflict, even surpassing Lune’s potential in certain scenarios. Furthermore, Facesum also enhances the total damage of Burn overall.
Maelle’s level 4 skill boosts her ability to inflict twice the number of Burn stacks on enemies when she fights in Offensive stance. This is easy to activate and can be combined with relevant Pictos. Additionally, at level 10, her Burn damage increases by 50%. The level 20 skill, however, is a bit tricky to understand – it implies that every time Maelle uses her basic attack on an enemy she isn’t currently attacking, the Burn stacks on that enemy are doubled. This could potentially increase Burn stacks from 20 to 60, dealing significant damage. While this skill can be situational, it’s very powerful when used effectively.
Maelle Burn build: Skills
By the end of the game, you should have the following skills equipped on Maelle for this build:
- Pyrolyse
- Rain of Fire
- Swift Stride
- Flueret Fury
- Breaking Rules
- Sword Ballet
Maelle’s most potent Burn ability is called Pyrolysis, inflicting 15 Burn and causing severe Fire damage to a single foe. When she adopts an Offensive stance, this damage increases to 21 Burn. This amount can potentially rise to 63 with her weapon and Pictos. Rain of Fire is a weaker variant, dealing 6-10 damage at its base level while in Defensive stance – which Maelle will be in following the use of Pyrolysis – but it also returns her to an Offensive stance, enabling another powerful burst from Pyrolysis. To inflict the maximum Burn damage, you should alternate between these two moves.
Swift Stride becomes particularly effective towards the latter stages of a fight because it places her in the Virtuose stance if the opponent is Burning, and Fleuret Fury allows her to maintain that stance and potentially Break them. Being in the Virtuose stance doubles her attack power, making it a powerful combination with Sword Ballet to inflict five extreme damage strikes on a single target, which are multiplied by two if they score critical hits, thus delivering the decisive blow. The Break skill serves as a utility tool here, annihilating all shields an enemy has and granting one AP for each shield destroyed. While not always essential, you’ll appreciate having it when the situation calls for it.
Maelle Burn build: Pictos and Luminas
By the final stages of the game, Maelle will need to be outfitted with the specified Pictos or Luminas according to her build:
1. (Equipment 1)
2. (Equipment 2)
3. (Equipment 3)
4. (Equipment 4)
5. (Equipment 5)
6. (Equipment 6)
- Draining Cleanse (Picto)
- Double Burn
- Painted Power
- Augmented First Strike
- Critical Burn
- Energising Cleanse
- Energising Start (1-4)
- Energising Turn
- Dead Energy
In the game, all the Pictos functioning for Maelle are equivalent in purpose to those serving Lune, primarily accumulating AP and dealing extra Burn damage. However, there are distinct variations: instead of First Strike, Augmented First Strike is employed, which amplifies her initial attack’s damage by 50%. This is particularly useful for a powerful Pyrolyse. Furthermore, the Picto is equipped with Draining Cleanse, an extra feature not essential but beneficial as it enhances Maelle’s HP and Defense, ensuring she can endure slightly longer in combat – a crucial factor given Maelle’s ability to resuscitate team members and inflict substantial Burn damage with one of her Gradient Skills.
Expedition 33 best Burn build: Best Verso build
In this setup, Verso is the last character added to the team, primarily functioning as a support. He distributes smaller quantities of Burn and damage, conserving his AP for crucial moments. As Verso’s rank advances, he accumulates more power, eventually capable of inflicting immense amounts of Burn that exceed typical damage levels.
Verso Burn build: Weapon
In this construction, Corpeso’s preferred weapon is the one that suits Verso best, as he primarily relies on basic attacks. This choice is optimal because the weapon performs exceptionally well for such purposes. Although it may not cause as much Burn damage as Lune or Maelle, it amplifies the damage done with Burn stacks and maintains a steady number of Burn stacks when Lune and Maelle are engaged elsewhere.
At level 4, Verso can deal 2 Burn debuffs with his standard attack for each rank he has, totaling up to 10 (or 20 if doubled) Burn debuffs when at S-Rank. His level 10 skill awards him 1 Action Point whenever he levels up, which provides some advantage. Lastly, his level 20 skill amplifies the damage of the Burn debuff by 50% for each rank, resulting in a maximum increase of 300% when at S-Rank.
Verso Burn build: Skills
By the end of the game, Verso should have the following skills equipped for this build:
- From Fire
- Light Holder
- Leadership
- Blitz
- End Bringer
- Phantom Stars
Verso’s ability “From Fire” restores 20% of his health when an enemy is on fire, which can be handy in tight spots, and the remainder of his skills do not interact with being on fire at all. The skill “Light Holder” aids in increasing rank and inflicting light damage on enemies unaffected by fire damage. Additionally, “Leadership” allows him to spend 3 AP to restore up to 5 points of AP for all allies, essentially providing a party-wide energy boost. Since Verso primarily relies on his base attack, using 3 AP for this leadership skill is an efficient use of resources.
Blitz, End Bringer, and Phantom Stars are all abilities that can finish off an enemy. Blitz instantly eliminates any non-boss foe if it has less than 10% health left, allowing another turn to be played immediately. On the other hand, End Bringer and Phantom Stars both deliver numerous intense attacks without relying on weapon attributes, providing greater flexibility in their application.
Verso Burn build: Pictos and Luminas
By the end of the game, Verso should have the following Pictos or Luminas equipped for this build:
- Combo Attack (1-3)
- Augmented Counter
- Augmented Attack
- Double Burn
- Painted Power
- Critical Burn
- Energising Cleanse
- Energising Start (1-4)
- Energising Turn
- Dead Energy
Beyond the details discussed earlier about Lune, Maelle, and Verso, it’s worth noting that Verso can activate Combo Attack three times during his basic attacks. This unique ability allows him to strike up to four times with a single swing. For each base attack hit, Verso accumulates two stacks of Burn at every rank level. When combined with the Double Burn effect, this means he can inflict up to 80 stacks of burn with a single basic attack, given that his rank is S, which multiplies his damage by three. This feature also helps him save AP for supporting allies or performing a final blow. Additionally, we’ve equipped Verso with Augmented Counter, which amplifies the damage he deals when countering attacks, and Augmented Attack, which enhances his basic attack power by 50%.
