Gustave

In the game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Gustave is the initial character you can control. He’s particularly intriguing because of his mechanical arm, which is where most of his unique abilities originate. His fighting style primarily involves accumulating energy with his skills and then discharging it for massive damage – a tactic that proves very useful (and unintentionally amusing to phrase).

Gustave is portrayed by Charlie Cox, a renowned actor recognized primarily for his role as Matt Murdock, or simply put, the hero Daredevil, from the Marvel’s Daredevil series.

Lune

Lune enters the journey with Gustave shortly after its commencement, primarily functioning as your main source of elemental damage in battles. Essentially, she serves as the game’s mage character. During combat, Lune acquires “marks” or “stains” by casting specific elemental spells – a mark of fire when using fire magic, a mark of ice when using ice magic. These marks can be consumed to boost damage output or inflict status effects when employing other types of magic, such as lightning spells that frequently consume fire marks to deal more damage.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to mention that Lune, my favorite game character, is brilliantly voiced by the talented Kirsty Rider. You might recognize her from her captivating portrayal of Emanuela in an episode of Netflix’s enchanting adaptation of The Sandman.

Maelle

Shortly after Lune becomes part of our group, I’d like to introduce you to Maelle – Gustave’s adopted little sister. In battle, she utilizes a unique mechanic known as battle stances. By employing skills, she assumes one of three distinct stances: Offensive, which amplifies damage but weakens defenses; Defensive, which reinforces defenses at the cost of reduced offense; and Virtuose, a balance that deals massive damage. The power of her abilities is enhanced by these stances, so it’s essential to switch between them on successive turns to maximize their potential.

Maelle is given voice by Jennifer English, a renowned voice actress recognized for her roles as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Latenna in Elden Ring.

Sciel

Later in the game, Sciel arrives at the gathering, and her battle technique is among the most intricate of all playable characters. She possesses two categories of abilities: Sun skills that add Fortune bonuses to enemies and increase them for herself, and Moon skills that exploit the accumulated Fortune bonuses on enemies for increased damage or enhancements, while simultaneously granting her Moon stacks. When Sciel has both Sun and Moon stacks, she enters a state known as Twilight, which amplifies her attack power and doubles the limit of Fortune bonuses. It can be perplexing, and it might take effort to perfect her build and timing, but if you manage to grasp it, she can inflict colossal damage.

Sciel’s voice acting is provided by Shala Nyx, who is recognized for portraying Gita in The Old Guard, Farida in Cyberpunk 2077, as well as several characters in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Verso

Verso is voiced by Ben Starr, best known as leading man Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16.

Monoco

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to introduce Monoco, an enigmatic and captivating beast-like entity, who’s joining our expedition as the last member. This unique character requires some extra TLC to get him going, but trust me, it’s worth it! Unlike other party members who gain skills through leveling up, Monoco learns his abilities by vanquishing enemies while he’s part of the active team. The abilities he acquires are often variations of those used by his defeated foes, offering a vast array of over 40 unique skills to discover, making him an astonishingly versatile character that can seamlessly fit into almost any strategy — if you invest the time to collect these abilities for him.

Monoco also boasts an intriguing battle mechanic: a wheel brimming with different stances, similar to Maelle’s. Each skill he possesses will nudge this wheel a specific number of spaces. Since every skill Monoco can use has a buff based on the stance the wheel is currently in, you’ll frequently need to switch things up to maximize his potential.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always appreciated the richness of character voices that bring my favorite games to life. One such voice actor who’s left an indelible mark on my gaming experiences is Rich Keeble. This talented guy has lent his voice to numerous characters across diverse titles, including Split Fiction, Wuthering Waves, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and many others. I can’t wait to see what other magical roles he brings to life in future games!
