On June 17, 2025, Civilization 7 is set to receive an update, bringing long-anticipated content to its fans. Included in this release are expansive Large and colossal Huge map options, accessible on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the upcoming Switch 2. Regrettably, these enhancements will not be available for older consoles due to hardware constraints. These maps can accommodate up to a dozen civilizations when played solo and up to eight human players online in multiplayer mode.
Firaxis is giving players additional customization choices. This means they can choose to disable the Legacy Path mechanics altogether, or opt for selective disabling during specific game ages. Alternatively, they can activate only a chosen few Legacy Paths, thereby setting up particular situations such as a global scramble for the New World or nuclear proliferation. Similarly, players will have the option to decide which crises will manifest at the conclusion of each age.
Additional personalization options are being added, allowing you to sidestep civilization advancements, modify the unique abilities of AI entities, and alter the starting aggression levels of autonomous factions on the map. Essentially, this means you’ll have greater control over making life easier or harder for your population.
If the current options aren’t sufficient for you, don’t worry – Steam Workshop support is on its way! This means finding top-notch mods will become easier than ever before.
Regarding new content, Firaxis intends to introduce a fresh type of Town Specializations: Resort Towns. These settlements offer extra Gold and Happiness depending on the Natural Appeal of their tiles, and they yield additional benefits from Natural Wonders. Moreover, the Urban Center has undergone changes and now reduces the upkeep costs for buildings, enabling you to build essential structures like Libraries and Baths without having to upgrade a Town to a City – this significantly enhances gameplay styles focused on Towns.
Changes will also be made to other types of settlements: Fortified towns can now accommodate extra defensive walls, Religious centers offer a more substantial boost to happiness, Industrial towns extend their trade radius, Mining towns yield higher production based on their upgrades, and only Hub towns will experience a reduction in influence production in the future.
In the upcoming version 1.2.2, you’ll find 24 fresh City-State Bonuses, two distinct Pantheons, and a set of 14 Religious Beliefs designed to enhance the complexity and immersion in the game’s diplomatic and religious aspects.
Apart from their ongoing projects, Firaxis is additionally focusing on adjusting the balance of Specialists, enhancing the concept of Treasure Fleets which will now be referred to as Treasure Convoys and operate along land routes, and implementing other modifications.
