Christopher Nolan Reveals the One Early Career Choice He Wishes He Had Done Differently

Christopher Nolan is considered one of today’s greatest filmmakers, alongside directors like Denis Villeneuve and Yorgos Lanthimos. He’s known for changing what big-budget movies can be, with complex and impressive films such as Tenet, Dunkirk, and Interstellar.

Surprisingly, even a director as successful as Nolan has a significant regret, and it involves the iconic film Pulp Fiction and its director. While most people discovered Nolan’s unique style after Memento came out in 2000, he had already been working in the film industry for years.

Before his first feature film, Following, was released in 1998, Nolan spent time honing his skills with short films, frequently working with his brother, Jonathan. During this early part of his career, he was especially inspired by Quentin Tarantino, whose 1992 film Reservoir Dogs announced him as a groundbreaking new talent.

Everyone was eagerly awaiting Quentin Tarantino’s next film, and Christopher Nolan, who was an intern at the time, managed to get a copy of the Pulp Fiction script before the movie came out.

Later, Nolan told The New York Times that he wished he hadn’t read it first. As a huge fan of Tarantino, he felt that reading the story didn’t have the same powerful effect as experiencing it as a movie in the theater.

Nolan explained that reading a script can’t compare to the experience of watching the finished film. He likened the temptation to read a screenplay early to the childhood urge to open Christmas presents before the holiday – it ruins the surprise. For Nolan, the joy of going to the movies comes from discovering a completely new world alongside the audience, and he felt he lost that magic by knowing the plot twists and character interactions beforehand.

Christopher Nolan is currently working on his biggest project yet, a film called The Odyssey, set to release on July 17th. This epic action movie is based on the classic Greek poem by Homer. It’s also a first for Nolan – it’s the first film he’s shot entirely using a new, improved IMAX 70mm film camera that’s lighter and quieter than previous models.

The upcoming film, The Odyssey, boasts an incredible cast of A-list stars. Matt Damon will play the clever King Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway as his devoted wife Penelope, and Tom Holland as their son Telemachus, who has been searching for his father for twenty years.

The impressive ensemble also includes Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Charlize Theron as the powerful sorceress Circe, and Robert Pattinson as the scheming suitor Antinous. Director Christopher Nolan filmed in various locations, including the island of Favignana in Sicily and Morocco, to authentically recreate the ancient Mediterranean world.

Those who have previewed the film, including Nolan’s brother, Jonathan, are calling it a remarkable accomplishment, successfully combining historical accuracy with the fantastical elements of Greek mythology. With a budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is expected to be the biggest movie event of the summer.
