Christopher Nolan Recalls INTERSTELLAR Scene He ‘Didn’t Particularly Like’

Timothée Chalamet, known for his acting, recently took a break from playing ping-pong to visit AMC Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. He met up with director Christopher Nolan for a special IMAX 70mm showing of their film, Interstellar. Chalamet interviewed Nolan, and they discussed a particular scene from the movie that Nolan wasn’t completely satisfied with.

Timothée Chalamet, who starred as Tom, the son of Matthew McConaughey’s character in the film, says Interstellar is still his most beloved project. The Academy Award nominee even confessed he cried for a full hour after seeing the finished movie and discovering his part had been reduced.

Timothée Chalamet shared with the audience that while he wasn’t a major character in Interstellar—he was twelfth on the call sheet—the film arrived at a pivotal moment in his life and career when things were still uncertain. He considers it his favorite project to date, and surprisingly, he’s seen it more times than any other movie ever made.

Nolan recalls that after receiving mixed reviews at first, it was a huge relief and a surprisingly grounding experience when Interstellar proved to be a commercial success.

Nolan says that seeing audience members deeply moved and even cry during test screenings was enough to know the film had succeeded. He adds that the scale of the project meant that emotional impact was the ultimate measure of success.

Nolan Was Not a Huge Fan of This Interstellar Scene of Chalamet’s

A particularly moving part of the film shows Cooper watching video messages from his children as they grow up. Timothée Chalamet delivers some powerful moments in that scene. Interestingly, director Christopher Nolan initially felt Chalamet’s performance was a little too somber.

Nolan remembers being concerned about the emotional intensity of the home video messages you were filming. He felt they were overly bleak and expressed his discomfort, but ultimately you made the creative decision to proceed as you saw fit.

In the end, Nolan dropped it, and the recordings made the final cut.

It’s hard to say how the scene would have turned out if Timothée Chalamet hadn’t voiced his concerns. Now, Christopher Nolan is starting work on his next film, The Odyssey, and Chalamet is preparing for Dune 3. The Odyssey, filmed for Imax, will be released in theaters on July 17th.
