Matt Damon plays the legendary hero Odysseus in this new film, continuing his working relationship with director Christopher Nolan after their collaborations on Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Anne Hathaway stars as Odysseus’s wife, Penelope, and Tom Holland plays their son, Telemachus.
Let me tell you, this movie doesn’t skimp on talent! We’re talking Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron all sharing the screen. And it’s great to see Christopher Nolan producing, along with his wife Emma Thomas, through their company, Syncopy – you just know that level of involvement means a quality film.
Based on the classic story by Homer, The Odyssey recounts the incredible journey of Odysseus as he battles monsters like the Cyclops, resists the enchanting songs of the Sirens, and outwits the powerful witch Circe. Throughout his perilous travels, Odysseus is determined to return home to his wife, Penelope, and reclaim his kingdom.
Nolan started working on the movie in March 2024 and had a deal with Universal Pictures by October. It was officially announced in December 2024, and actors were chosen throughout the rest of the year. Matt Damon was confirmed to play Odysseus in February 2025. Filming lasted from February to August and took place in several countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara. Costing $250 million, this is Nolan’s most expensive project yet, and the first he’s filmed entirely using IMAX 70 mm cameras.
Okay, mark your calendars, folks! Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey is officially landing in theaters on July 17th, 2026. And let me tell you, if you’re familiar with Nolan’s work, you can expect a truly immersive experience. We’re talking his trademark blend of grand storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and some seriously epic action – all wrapped around a classic tale that’s been enchanting people for millennia. I’m already excited!
