As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for television history, I must say that the anecdotes shared by Christopher Knight, Barry Williams, and Eve Plumb about their experiences on The Brady Bunch are truly captivating. Their tales of behind-the-scenes shenanigans and close calls, such as Knight’s encounter with a live tarantula, add a unique layer to the beloved sitcom that many fans, including myself, never knew existed.
Christopher Knight shared an interesting tale about being tricked into filming a scene with a live tarantula for The Brady Bunch, a popular sitcom from the past. At 67 years old, he recently discussed intriguing aspects of the show’s history alongside cast members Barry Williams and Eve Plumb on the Today Show.
In the well-known ABC sitcom that aired from September 26, 1969, to March 8, 1974, Knight portrayed Peter, a character who was one of the offspring of Mike Brady (played by Robert Reed). Williams took on the role of Greg, Peter’s sibling, and Plumb acted as Jan, one of Carol Martin’s daughters, who became Mike’s stepchildren.
In the fourth season’s episode named “Pass the Tabu,” Knight recollected a nerve-wracking moment when Peter Brady was tricked into believing a tarantula would be resting above him. He commented, “They indeed deceived me. They claimed they placed ball bearings on its fangs to prevent it from biting.
During filming, he admitted to both Hoda Kotb and Carson Daly that he was incredibly fearful. He further explained, “I was petrified, yet in a way that was ideal because it allowed me to demonstrate my brave side to the ladies. I didn’t want them to realize just how terrified I truly was.
Williams was present at the scene and recalls taking action. He reassured the audience about his familiarity with tarantulas, having kept one as a pet before. Concerned for Knight’s well-being, he picked up the spider himself and moved it to a safe location. He stated, “That was an actual spider, and there was nothing beneath it; it was on him. And then I arrived and had to determine how to remove it from him.
Eve Plumb recollected an intriguing aspect from the show – a cat named Fluffy, who belonged to the Bradys’ daughters. This feline friend made an appearance during the first episode, but later on, it seemed unexplainably absent from subsequent episodes in the series.
One recollection Chris Knight, aged 66, shared about the Brady clan involved their beloved pet, Tiger, a dog who made appearances during the early seasons but eventually faded from the storyline.
The Brady Bunch is available for streaming on Pluto TV and Paramount+.
