In her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, Christina Applegate shares personal details about the challenges she faced while becoming famous. The book, available March 3rd, includes her thoughts on playing Kelly Bundy in the popular TV show Married… with Children, a role she wasn’t immediately sure about.
Applegate confessed that she and her mother initially dismissed the show’s script, calling it low-quality and full of crude humor. Though they first refused to be involved, they changed their minds after watching the pilot episode. They found themselves laughing uncontrollably at the very show they expected to dislike.
The actress reveals that getting the part of Kelly Bundy on the show had a big effect on her existing issues with how she saw her body. She had struggled with body dysmorphia and anorexia before, and felt a lot of pressure to look a certain way to match the character’s image.
The actress shared that she felt immense pressure to be very thin in order to wear the clothes she’d chosen for her character, Kelly. She explained that the outfits were so revealing that she felt compelled to restrict her eating even more, fearing any visible sign she’d eaten would be noticeable.
When Applegate was at the peak of her career on the show, she became very focused on restricting her diet, often eating extremely small meals or skipping food entirely. She also exercised intensely, going to several classes each day in a pursuit of perfection that she now realizes was impossible to achieve.
As the show went on, the actress remembers her costumes getting noticeably smaller, which often caused a strong reaction from the live audience. Looking back, she feels uncomfortable recalling those moments, explaining that the show was overly suggestive and would likely be made very differently today.
Even though playing the role negatively affected her health, Applegate emphasized she doesn’t blame her former coworkers. She admitted that her character was created to be visually appealing to men, but she truly didn’t realize the effect it would have on viewers at the time.
Christina Applegate is a well-loved actress in Hollywood, recently praised for her performance as Jen Harding in the Netflix series Dead to Me. Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, she’s paused traditional acting roles but continues to connect with fans through her podcast, MeSsy, which she co-hosts with her friend Jamie-Lynn Sigler.
The actress uses her podcast to openly talk about the challenges of everyday life, including dealing with a long-term illness and the ups and downs of raising a family. Although a planned reboot of the animated series Married… with Children was supposedly cancelled by the studio in late 2025, Applegate has been prioritizing her well-being and her family.
She’s been focusing on appreciating the simple things, like driving her daughter to school each day. Her upcoming memoir promises to be a very honest and personal account of her life, from growing up in Laurel Canyon to her recent struggles with health.
