The classic crime thriller Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is getting a sequel after 31 years. Considered one of the best heist movies ever made, Heat will be followed by Heat 2, and Christian Bale has signed on to star.

The highly anticipated cast for the upcoming film includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Austin Butler, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Stephen Graham, Ana de Armas, and Al Pacino. Christian Bale recently confirmed he’s involved in an interview with Fox’s Jake Hamilton, who shared the news on X (formerly Twitter). Rumors about Bale joining the project, directed by Michael Mann, started in November 2025. This marks the first collaboration between Mann and the Oscar-winning actor since their 2009 film, Public Enemies.

The film Heat centers around a professional thief named Neil McCauley (De Niro) planning one final heist before retirement, while Lt. Vincent Hanna (Pacino) relentlessly pursues him, leading to a gripping showdown. Heat 2 is based on Michael Mann’s 2022 novel and expands the story by serving as both a prequel to the book and a sequel to the original film. It will delve into the early career of Lt. Hanna and revisit the criminals from the 1995 movie. Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly set to play Chris Shiherlis, McCauley’s partner, a role originally held by Val Kilmer. While unconfirmed, rumors suggest Christian Bale may portray a younger version of Lt. Hanna.
Production on Heat 2 is scheduled to start filming in Chicago in the near future. While there’s no confirmed release date, the movie is currently expected to be in theaters around 2027.
With a budget of $60 million, Heat earned over $187 million globally and became a major influence on crime thrillers – some even call it one of the best American crime films ever made. Now that Christian Bale has joined a new project, we can expect more casting announcements soon. Bale will first appear in The Bride, which will be released in theaters on March 6, 2026.
