Chris Hemsworth is known for playing heroic characters in movies, but recently he’s been dealing with a private challenge. In an interview with The Guardian, he discussed the anxiety and uncertainty he experienced before revealing a significant health issue to the public.
Hemsworth wondered if revealing his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s would alter public perception of him. He was concerned it could impact his reputation as an action hero and potentially limit his acting opportunities. Sharing such personal information felt difficult for him.
He admitted he was starting to feel vulnerable, questioning whether he’d shared too much of himself with others. He wondered if people would still see him as the tough action hero or the Marvel character if they knew his doubts and fears, and if he even wanted them to know that side of him.
Chris Hemsworth learned about a potential health risk in 2022 while filming the Disney+ series Limitless. Doctors discovered he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, which significantly increases his chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease – by as much as eight to ten times. While this isn’t a diagnosis, it was still surprising news.
This film really hit home for me, and I suspect it will for many others. It turns out the story isn’t just a role for Chris Hemsworth; it’s deeply personal. He comes from a family touched by Alzheimer’s – his grandfather suffered from it, and sadly, his father is now battling the disease too. Seeing his dad go through this has completely shifted his perspective on what truly matters – time, his work, and most importantly, family. It’s a raw and honest performance, clearly informed by his own experiences.
I’ve definitely slowed down and become more mindful,” Hemsworth explained to The Guardian. “I’ve realized how precious and delicate life is. It makes you think about things like the fact that my father won’t be around forever.
This change in perspective has also influenced how he sees his children, who are now growing up quickly at ages 11 and 13. He now appreciates the little things and cherishes everyday moments at home more than ever before.
Over time, Chris Hemsworth’s approach to choosing roles has evolved as his priorities have shifted. Early in his career, he often accepted jobs primarily to support his family and felt pressured to take well-paying opportunities, even if he wasn’t passionate about the projects themselves.
He confessed he often wondered, ‘Considering where I started, how could I refuse such a lucrative opportunity?’ He also acknowledged that sometimes he took jobs not because they were creatively fulfilling, but for the money.
In 2025, he released a documentary titled A Road Trip to Remember, detailing his father’s struggle with illness. He explained that the film was a heartfelt tribute, designed to evoke cherished memories and encourage quality time together.
Hemsworth has also dismissed the notion that his genetic predisposition means his acting career is over. He’s emphasized that this isn’t a definitive medical diagnosis. As he previously stated, the gene simply indicates a potential risk, not a guaranteed outcome.
He was upset by headlines that suggested he was retiring. In 2024, he explained, “It really bothered me because it felt like I’d opened up about something personal, and then that was twisted.”
Chris Hemsworth remains busy with his acting career. He’s starring in the new crime thriller, Crime 101, which hits theaters on February 13th. The film, directed by Bart Layton and adapted from a story by Don Winslow, also features Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan.
He’ll be back as Thor in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, which comes out December 18th. Despite being involved in such large films, he’s increasingly prioritizing a more balanced life centered around purpose and family.
